Math Intervention Summary:

Learner: Matthew

Delta Math Assessment Data:

Struggles to correctly name and identify three digit numbers

Struggles to accurately subtract numbers within 20.

Struggles to add two digit numbers


Forgets to line up by place value and regroup.

Struggles to subtract two digit numbers


Forgets to line up by place value and ungroup.

Intervention:

Day 1:

Gave Matthew a pre-assessment based on the 2nd grade Delta Math Assessment data. The test re-
assessed each of the areas he struggled with according to the Delta test.
Played two math games including a card game (subtracting war) and a dice game in order to work on
subtracting numbers within 20.

Day 2:

Interviewed Matthew and learned that although math is his favorite subject in school, math tests are the
hardest part of school for him. He also likes reading, but dislikes writing. After school, he likes to play
outside and have his mom help him with homework.
Played several logic games with Matthew and discovered that he is able to reason well using number
patterns, but struggles with more abstract thought processes.

Day 3:

Worked out a couple of story problems in order to model problem-solving steps and strategies.
Played a couple of addition, subtraction, and multiplication fluency games in order to work on quick
recall of math facts.

Next Steps:

Overall, I think Matthew needs to remember to read math problems carefully and check his answers
before moving on. He seems to miss details such as which place value each digit is in and whether to
add or subtract, and he often comes up with numbers that would not make sense if he were to reason
accurately. I would suggest showing him how to check if an answer is reasonable by using rounding
and estimation strategies.

In order to be successful in third grade math, Matthew needs to continue working on subtraction and
addition facts within 20. He often counts on his fingers or makes a quick guess at the answer. Instead, it
would be beneficial for him to practice strategies such as drawing pictures or making ten.
It would also be beneficial for him to memorize some of his addition and subtractions facts especially
doubles so that he could use these throughout the reasoning process.
