Lesson Plan 2- The Cow Tripped Over the Moon (This Old Man)

Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.7

Make connections between the text of a story or drama and a visual or oral presentation of

the text, identifying where each version reflects specific descriptions and directions in the

text.

Grade Level: 4th Grade

Learning Targets: I can create a visual representation of the text of a nursery rhyme.

Concepts: To create a visual representation of the events in a nursery rhyme.

Strategies:

As a class we will read/ sing the book The Cow Tripped Over the Moon (10 min.)

After reading students will get into partners

Each set of partners will pick one of the nursery rhymes that were mentioned in the

story we just read.

Students tasks are to dissect their nursery rhyme and figure out the events that are

happening in the story.

Groups will then get to create a multimedia presentation to put a visual with the text

they just dissected.

If students choose to do a powerpoint they have to use pictures they created

themselves whether it be pictures of them acting out each event or pictures they drew

themselves.

Students can choose a different method where they have to find pictures from

magazines and glue them onto a storyboard.

An extension to this project could be that students have to pick a word they didnt

know the meaning of and create a visual representation of what it means and how it is

being used in the text. (Entire Project should take two whole class periods)

Materials:

Printed nursery rhymes

Chromebooks or Ipads (has to be able to take pictures on)

Magazines

Poster board

Colored pencils

Scissors

Glue

Book Cow Tripped Over the Moon

Rational: Having students analyze nursery rhymes helps them achieve a standard of making

connections between the text of a story or drama. Some of the vocabulary used in these nursery

rhymes, students have heard but do not understand the meaning. This gives students the ability to

create an understanding of what really is happening in the rhymes. The multimedia portion of

this lesson is so students can demonstrate their understandings of multimedia. I have the students

read/sing the story with me at the beginning because the story is a fun motivator and singing is a

great way to engage students and keep them listening.
