Genogram

It is a tool that has enhanced counselling in family therapy and social work for a couple of years
(Galindo & Reagan, 2006). It can also be used in genetic counselling because the counselor can gather
more information about the client through it. Below is an example of a genogram which encompass
three generations.

This genogram tell us more about the family of William Johns. Mary married very young, has
divorced and married. She has a daughter from her first marriage and a son from the second
3

marriage. In contrast to her sister in law, ANN has a conflictual relationship with their mother.
The generation tells us the conflict because of the decision made by ANN to live cutoff wedlock
with Bill. Further examination of this genogram would give more detail about this family.

Eco map
This is a tool that provides an overview of the family or individual in the life space (Holman,
1983). Is shows the ecological systems and boundaries that encompass the family. It is a simple
and a pencil simulation that has been established as an assessment, interventive and planning
tool.

The rectangles showing the paternal grandparent t Johnsons, the maternal grandmother and
Nicole, Sarah sister are joined to the lines representing a strong source of support. A rectangle
that connects to the pediatrician suggest a stressful relationship. The rectangles for the speech
language pathologist and physical therapist that consult the family suggest supportive
relationship and the home visitor rectangle.
