1. A McLeod gauge of V0 = 200cm3 and capillary cross-sectional area a = 0.1 cm2

indicates 1 cm of mercury. Express the pressure in microns.

2. A manometer connected to a pipe indicates a negative gauge pressure of 70

mm of mercury. What is the pressure in the pipe in N/m2?

3. A horizontal venturimeter with 15 cm inlet and 7.5 cm throat is used for

measuring the flow of cooling water in a manufacturing process. The
differential pressure between the inlet and throat is 17.5 cm when measured
using a mercury U-tube manometer. Make calculation for the water flow rate
if the discharge coefficient for the venturimeter is 0.97. (Density of water =
1000kg/m3and specific gravity of mercury = 13.6) .

4. A 30 cm X 15 cm venturimeter is provided in a vertical pipe line carrying oil of

specific gravity 0.9; the flow upwards. The difference in elevations of the throat
section and entrance section of the venturimeter is 30 cm. The differential U-
tube mercury manometer shows a gauge deflection of 25cm. Calculate (i) the
discharge of the oil and (ii) the pressure difference between the entrance and
throat section. Take the discharge coefficient as 0.98 and the specific gravity
of mercury as 13.6

5. A 4 cm diameter orifice in the vertical side of a tank discharges water. The

water surface in the tank is at a constant level of 2 m above the centre of the
orifice. If the head loss in the orifice is 0.20 m and the coeff. Of contraction can
be assumed to be 0.63, estimate: The values of coeff. of velocity and the coeff.
of discharge; The discharge through orifice.

6. The flow velocity of water in a pipe is measured by a pitot static tube. The tube
is placed at the centre of a 30 cm diameter pipe. The difference between the
stagnation and static pressures measured as head of mercury and converted
to head of water is 10 sm. If the coefficient of velocity Cv= 0.98, determine the
velocity of water in the pipe. If the mean velocity is 0.7 times the centre line
velocity, compute the discharge of water through the pipe. The head causing
the flow is given as head of flowing fluid.

7. A pitot static tube is used to measure the velocity of air in a duct. The water
manometer slows a reading of 8 cm. The static pressure in the duct is 9 kN/m2
and the aire temperature is 320 K. The local barometer reads 740 mm of
mercury. Calculate the density of air in the duct of Cv= 0.98.

8. The actual velocity of a liquid issuing through a 7 cm diameter orifice fitted in

an open tank is 6 m/s under a head of 3 m. If the discharge measured in a
collecting tank is 0.020 m3/s, calculate the coefficient of velocity, coefficient of
contraction and the discharge through the orifice.
