Volleyball Rules, Terms and Skill Cues

Rules of the Serve:

1. The server must serve behind the end line and cannot move forward until he
or she makes contact with the ball.
2. Ball must be served overhand or underhand.
3. The serve must make it over the net and make it in bounds on the opposing
teams side in order to score a point.
4. If the ball grazes the net and goes onto the other teams side, this would be
called a Let and the server would get another chance to serve the ball over
the net. If two Lets happen in a row, this counts as a point for other team
and they get the ball.
5. A player continues to serve until the other team scores a point off of their
serve. Once the team gets the ball back, a rotation will occur and a new
player will serve.
6. A serve cannot be blocked, but instead the first hit from a serve must be a
bump.
7. The person serving only gets 1 chance to successfully get the ball over the
net, unless a Let occurs.
Scoring:
1. Rally scoring is used for volleyball. This means that every time a team
successfully wins a point, that point will go towards their score.

goes into the net.

Rotation:
1. Teams will consist of 4-7 players depending on class size.
2. Players will rotate after they win a defensive point and get the ball to serve.
3. Players will rotate clockwise.
In Game Rules:
1. A team has a maximum of 3 hits to successfully get the ball over the net to
the opposing teams side.
2. A player may NOT hit the ball two times in a row.
3. If the offensive team puts the ball over the net to the defensive team and the
ball hits the boundary line, that counts as in.
4. Only body parts above the waist are allowed to be used for legal hits in
volleyball.
