1. Define interactive reading, surface approach to reading and deep approach to

reading.
Interactive Reading - is a form of reading in which you are not just looking at words on
a page to understand the text. But rather you are reading and as you read you ask
questions and think about what the authors means, what is his purpose for writing. This
type of reading allows you to stimulate your thinking as well as to help you remember
what you are reading.
Surface Approach to Reading - Surface looms large in the vocabulary of our
contributors, but rarely do they mean the literal surface of texts: paper, binding,
typography, the sounds of words read aloud. Nor do they construe surface as
symptomatic readers often haveas a layer that conceals, as clothing does skin,or
encloses, as a buildings facade does its interior. Following the lead of our
contributors, we take surface to mean what is evident, perceptible, apprehensible
in texts; what is neither hidden nor hiding; what, in the geometrical
sense, has length and breadth but no thickness, and therefore covers no
depth. A surface is what insists on being looked at rather than what we must
train ourselves to see through.

Deep Approach to Reading - is the active process of thoughtful and deliberate reading
carried out to enhance one's comprehension and enjoyment of a text. Contrast with
skimming or superficial reading. Also called slow reading.

2. Differentiate surface approach from deep approach to reading, Give examples from
your own experience
Surface reading only refers to the texts, typography and other pieces that you
dont need to think deeper to understand, while deep approach to reading needs to be
thought off, deeply understand what the writer really wants to tell us.
In example, I use surface approach in reading when Im reading a long
paragraph but have short time or Im in a hurry. I just read it and try to find the main
idea. I use deep approach in reading whenever I read any poetry pieces or spoken
poetry pieces because it is a kind of literary piece that you need to deeply think in order
to understand and enjoy the literary piece.

3. What is Active or Efficient reading?

Active reading simply means reading something with a determination to
understand and evaluate it for its relevance to your needs.

4. How can a person become an efficient reader? Give two examples based on your
experience
I think a person can be an efficient reader if he or she can share or explain to
others what he or she have read. I think it is effective if you can share what youve read
to others because in that way you recall the key points, the main idea of what youve
read that makes you an efficient reader. Also, if while you are reading, youll ask what is
the purpose of the author, what is this all about or some other questions, this shows that
you are an efficient reader because you are showing an interest on what you are
reading.

5. What is reading speed? Is reading speed an indicator of reading success? Can a

reader be successful even if he/she is a slow reader?
Reading speed is the rate at which a person reads written text (printed or
electronic) in a specific unit of time. Reading speed is generally calculated by the
number of words read per minute.
I think that reading speed is not an indicator of reading success because you can
read at a fast rate but you cannot fully understand what you read about. A reader can
be successful even if he or she is a slow learner as long as he or she can fully
comprehend the text that he or she is reading.
