Homework Two: Goffmans Dramaturgical Approach

The concept I would like to apply is Goffmans dramaturgical approach which compares

the events in a persons life to scenes of a play. The individual is an actor in life and acts on a role

in social situations. He or she does not have a choice to be an actor or actress because he or she

has been given the part since birth. One learns and practices his or her roles in life in a process

called socialization. The front stage where one is social is a place for he or she to perform his or

her role, and the back stage where one has privacy is a place for he or she to be himself or herself

and to practice for the front stage. A person does not have to act in the back stage and can use the

privacy to relax or prepare for future social situations. This includes impression management

where one presents himself or herself in a certain way to receive certain responses from others.

The individual is involved in role-taking and will influence what others think of him or her. A

resource or article I will use is called Self Presentation through Appearance: A Manipulative vs. a

Dramaturgical Approach by Efrat Tseelon. The author describes ones level of sincerity within

his or her self presentation through personal appearance, how Goffmans drama metaphor is

related to the style of ones performance, and how Goffmans approach contrasts with impression

management.
