Body Composition Assessment

Instructions for Analysis and Write-Up

I. Demographics
List the following information for your client:

Client
Age 27 Current % BF
Gender Male Skinfold 11.3
Height 69 inches Waist Hip Ratio 0.85
Weight 155 Circumference 13.98
BMI 22.9 BIA 15
Body fatness classification Normal Healthy %BF goal 8

II. Skinfold Method

A. Select an equation appropriate for your client.
B. Follow all standardized testing procedures. Record two readings within 10% of each other
for each site included in the equation. Average these two readings.
C. Show all formulas and calculations for body density.
D. Convert body density into %BF using appropriate age-gender-race conversion formula.
Location Reading 1 Reading 2 Average
Chest 7 8 7.5
abdomen 10 11 10.5
thigh 20 20 20
III. Anthropometric Methods
A. Calculate your client's BMI and compare to BMI nomogram value. Classify your client's BMI
value.
B. Measure your client's waist and hip circumferences. Use the nomogram for the WHR score.
Classify your client's WHR score. 0.85 WHR Moderate
C. Select a circumference equation appropriate for your client.
D. Measure the sites, following all standardized testing procedures.
E. Show all formulas and calculations of body density.

F. Use the appropriate age-gender-race conversion formula to estimate %BF from body
density.
Circumferences Measurement (cm)
Abdomen 80

Hip 88

Illiac crest 84

Waist 78
V. BIA Method
A. Follow all pretest guidelines and standardized testing procedures.
B. Record manufacturer's estimate of %BF. %BF=15

VI. Comparison of Methods

A. Compare each %BF estimate to the %BF obtained from BIA. How large and in what
direction (over- or underestimation) were the differences? Looking at the different
readings the skinfold was the lowest of the three readings. The BIA had the highest
reading for my client. The difference between the skinfold calculation (11.3%) and
the circumference measurements (13.98%) was 2.68%. The difference between
skinfold and BIA was 3.7%. For the BIA and circumference there was a 1.02%
difference. So over all there was an average of 2.5% difference between the different
measurements. When comparing the results it can be difficult when categorizing my
client. When looking just at skinfold and circumference results this puts him in the
category of mild for physically active adults. If only looking at the BIA reading it
puts my client in the upper level.
B. Which field technique do you think gave the closest estimate of %BF? Suggest reasons why
this field method was best. I think that skinfold was closest estimate of %BF. I think it
was easier to get an accurate reading where specifically my client held the most
weight. My client held his excess weight in his abdomen and when getting a skinfold
compared to a circumference measurement it was much easier to get a good reading.
My client is a lean individual to begin with so the best way to measure his body fat
would probably be a bod-pod machine or underwater weighing but we dont have
those here so I think skinfold was the closest to actuality.
C. Which field technique gave the worst estimate of %BF? Suggest reasons why this field
method was worst. I think the worst technique was the BIA. First off I could only do
the test one time before the device ran out of battery. The BIA also gets incorrect
readings if the client is dehydrated or too hydrated. There could also be errors in the
system itself like in any electronic measuring device. This way of measuring is
probably best if used for tracking over a long period of time and not for a single
measurement.

D. VII. Classification of Body Fatness and Calculation of Healthy Body Weight

A. Using the estimate of %BF you believe was best, classify and evaluate your client's body
fatness. Mild
B. Determine a healthy %BF goal for your client and calculate his or her healthy BW. Show all
work.

C. Make recommendations to help your client achieve the healthy body weight and body
composition goals. My client is already very active. I think that if he increases the
intensity of his workouts and decreases his portion sizes at meals he should easily
get to his new healthy %BF.

D. VIII. Exercise Prescription for Body Composition Change

A. Set a short-term, realistic body composition goal for your client. Short-term goal could be
to lose 1 pound of true fat in 2 weeks.
B. Write an exercise prescription for either FFM gain, %BF loss, or a combination of the two.
Be certain to include the following: mode, intensity, frequency, duration, and length of
program.

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5
