Chapter 4 Assessment RESEARCH LINKS

All exercises with blue numbers have answers in the back of this book.

4.1 Naming Binary Compounds

A. Naming Compounds That Contain a Metal and a Nonmetal

1. What is a binary compound? Give three examples of binary
compounds.
Binary compound is a compound formed from only two elements.
NaCl, NaI, CaO

2. What are the two major types of binary compounds?

Metals and nonmetals

3. In an ionic compound, the positive ion is called the Proton and the negative
ion is called the Electron.

4. In naming ionic compounds, we always name the Cation first.

5. Although we write the formula of sodium chloride as NaCl, we realize that

NaCl is an ionic compound and contains no molecules. Explain.
Because NaCl is a compound composed of metals and non-metals that is the basis of
ionic compounds. whereas the molecule is a group of atoms (at least two) are linked
to each other with a very strong (covalent) in a specific arrangement and electrically
neutral and stable enough.

6. Give the name of each of the following simple binary ionic compounds.
a. NaI : Sodium Iodide
b. CaF2 : Calsium Flouride
c. Al2S3 : Aluminum (III) Sulfide (II)
e. SrO : Strontium Oxide
f. AgCl : Silver Chloride
g. CsI : Cesium Iodide
h. Li2O : Lithium (II) Oxide

7. Identify each case in which the name is incorrect. Give the correct
name.
a. BaH2, Barium Hydride

b. Na2O, Disodium Oxide

c. SnCl4, Tin(IV) Chloride
d. SiO2, Silicon Dioxide
e. FeBr3, Iron(III) Bromide

8. Write the name of each of the following ionic substances, using the
system that includes a Roman numeral to specify the charge of the
cation.
a. FeI3 : Iron(III) bromide
b. MnCl2 : Manganese(II) chloride
c. HgO : Mercury(II) Oxide
d. Cu2O : Copper(I) oxide

e. CuO : Copper(II) oxide

f. SnBr4 : Tin(IV) Bromide

9. Write the name of each of the following ionic substances, using -ous or -ic
endings to indicate the charge of the cation.
a. CoCl2 :
b. CrBr3 :
c. PbO :
d. SnO2 :
e. Fe2O3 :
f. FeCl3 :

B. Naming Binary Compounds That Contain

Only Nonmetals (Type III)
10. Name each of the following binary compounds of nonmetallic elements.
a. IF5 : Iodine Pentaflouride
b. AsCl3 : Arsenic Trichloride
c. SeO : Selenium Oxide
d. XeF4 : Xeon Tetrafluoride
e. NI3 : Nitrogen Triiodide
f. B2O3 : Boron Trioxide

11. Write the name for each of the following binary

compounds of nonmetallic elements.
a. GeH4 : Germanium Hydride
b. N2Br4 : Dinitrogen Tetrabromide
c. P2S5 : Diphosphorus Pentasulfide
d. SeO2 : Selenium Dioxide
e. NH3 : Ammonia
f. SiO2 : Silicon Dioxide
C. Naming Binary Compounds: A Review
12. Name each of the following binary compounds,
using the periodic table to determine whether
the compound is likely to be ionic (containing a
metal and a nonmetal) or nonionic (containing
only nonmetals).
a. B2H6 : nonionic
b. Ca3N2 : ionic
c. CBr4 : nonionic
d. Ag2S : nonionic
e. CuCl2 : nonionic
f. ClF : nonionic

13. Name each of the following binary compounds,

using the periodic table to determine whether
the compound is likely to be ionic (containing a
metal and a nonmetal) or nonionic (containing
only nonmetals).
a. RaCl2 : ionic
b. SeCl2 : nonionic
c. PCl3 : nonionic
d. Na3P : ionic
e. MnF2 : nonionic
f. ZnO : nonionic

4.2 Naming and Writing Formulas for More

Complex Compounds
A. Naming Compounds That Contain
Polyatomic Ions
14. What is an oxyanion? How is a series of
oxyanions named? (Give an example.)
Answer : An oxyanion is an anion containing oxygen. Any two series (the name of the one
with the smaller number of oxygen atoms ends in -ite, and the name of the one with the
larger number ends in ate)
Example :
NO2- : nitrite
NO3- : nitrate
SO3 2- : sulfite
SO4 2- : sulfate
15. Which oxyanion of chlorine contains the most
oxygen atoms: hypochlorite, chlorite, or
perchlorate?
Answer : Perchlorate
16. Copy and complete the table by filling in the missing
names or formulas of the indicated oxyanions.
BrO- hypobromite
IO3- iodate
IO4- periodate
-

nitrogen-containing polyatomic ions, including
the overall charge of the ion.
a. nitrate : NO3-
b. nitrite : NO2-
