We chose this topic because it is one small event that had a huge impact .Our process was

to list all the conflicts we could think of that we learned in school and then we chose the Civil

Rights era because it happened more than 20 years ago and it is what we were most interested in.

Our topic is important because it had huge outcomes. The first outcome is that more people

started participating in non-violent protest because they saw how effective it was; the next huge

outcome was buses were no longer segregated anymore and it gave African Americans more

encouragement to protest for their rights.

Most of our research was completed on the internet; it was difficult because there were a

lot of unreliable sources, but the internet is easy to access. We found several old newspapers that

were made during and after the boycott, which was helpful because we can see how much has

changed. We also used books; the books documented the events and described what happened.

The last thing we used were interviews of people who were alive at this time; this helped because

we were not only listening to what they went through, but we also heard different perspectives.

We also found the laws and rules of segregation on the bus. This was helpful because we

got to see how the rules were set for African Americans and what rules the bus drivers followed.

We also found the modified laws and rules after the boycott. Then we compared them to each

other to see what changed and what did not. The three most helpful sources were Rosa Parks: A

Primary Source Gallery. Library of congress.n.p.n.d.web.j this source was a newspaper telling

what happened and this was helpful because it listed many important facts about the boycott.

this book was an autobiography about how Rosa Parks was treated; this was helpful because it

showed how one person treated and made it easier to understand what she was feeling . Kristal

were documents written by African Americans about the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

We mostly had trouble finding primary sources. Before the boycott happened it

was not a huge thing and people did not think that it would have such a good outcome and they

did not think the government would change the law. The boycott lasted for a year and nothing

changed during that time, so it was difficult to find primary sources.

Our topic fits into this years contest theme because the theme was conflict and

compromise. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a conflict where African Americans were not

being treated equally and were segregated, so they started to boycott by not using the buses.

When this started to hurt the economy the government modified the law so that there was no

more segregation on the buses which was the compromise.
