colors through descriptions using their
other senses

Assessment - Students will turn in their color page to

create a class book with their other
peers

Lesson Structure/Procedures 1. This lesson will start with all students at

the carpet
2. I will begin this lesson by asking students
Do you think people who are blind can
understand color?
3. Allow time for a little bit of discussion
among students
4. Then ask the following question Can
people who are deaf understand music?
5. Allow more time for discussion among
students. Use guiding questions to
further their thinking on if deaf people
can understand music, how could blind
people understand color?
6. Then, I will pick a volunteer to blind fold
in front of the class. I will hand them an
object and they have to describe to the
class what color the object is
7. The first object would be an orange. I
would puncture the orange a little bit
with my nail so they can describe the
color with smell. After they describe the
color, the rest of the students will tell
them if they are right or not.
8. I will repeat this with a different
volunteer and use another object, such
as chocolate, a smelly marker, or a
banana.
9. After I have done this about 3 more
times, we will revisit the question Can
people who are blind understand color?
10. Then I will read The Black Book of Colors
11. I will then explain to students that we are
going to make our own black book of
colors.
12. I will hand out a sheet of paper that says
Color. Smells like. Tastes like. Feels
like. Sounds like.
13. I will remind them they need to come up
with their own colors and examples.
14. After they are done, I will hand out a
black piece of construction paper, glue,
and white crayons.
15. Students will have to describe their color
using a picture made from glue.
16. When these are dry, we will test each
persons color by flipping the papers
upside down and describing the pictures
by what we feel.
17. At the end of this lesson, I will remind
students that even though some people
may not have all senses like most people,
they can still see the world, but may use
other senses to make sense of the world
around them.
