UFS1 UFS2 TOOLS 2
Abstract
This document will walk though on three different UFS data recovery tools feature and what it
does. There will be examples on what the tool can be used to do and what it does. All the tools
will be compared to each other based on their supports, feature and function. There will be a
detail description on each of the features exist in this tool and what it could be used for.
UFS1 UFS2 TOOLS 3
There are multiple USF1 and USF2 free tools that could be used to examine the USF file
system. USF tools could be used to search for any lost files or folders on the drive or mounted
image. There is also a scanning function that allows the user to search for a specific folder
within the drive or mounted image. The main function is the data recovery that exists within the
tools. There are three specific tools that could be used to recover USF1 and USF2 file system
data that will be discussed in this document. There are Stellar Phoenix BSD Data Recovery,
UFS2 tools for Windows, and Kernal for Solaris Sparc Recovery.
Stellar Phoenix BSD Data Recovery is own by the Stellar Info Software, who has many
data recovery and file repair software products. This BSD Data Recovery software recovers lost
files, directories, and volumes from any USF/USF2 file system hard drives. These tools
supported any hard drive interfaces including SCSI, SATA, EIDE, and IDE. The software
searches for logical volumes on the hard disk by using the partition table information and
directly perform a scan to find the logical volumes on the disk if the partition table is damaged or
being modified. Another function that this software has is to perform searches for any lost files
and folder on the disk. User can find the specific file that they want to recover by using the
Find button and the scan result to find the specific file. The File Mask feature speed up the
recovery process by providing information, such as file type, file size, and date in the parameters
of the File Mask option. The Filter feature can be used to filter out the file type that the user
wants to recover by using file types and file signature. The tools are really flexible and give the
user full control of what they want to recover with some feature that allow them to have full

control on what should be recovered. The scan result can also be saved as a .DAT file for future
data recovery used, that allow user to stop and resume their data recovery process anytime.
The ufs2tools can read ufs filesystem and bas labels from Windows, and it supported
both usf1 and usf2. This tool supported any Windows Operating (OS) system, both 32-bit and
64-bit version the OS. The ufs2toolss feature is similar to the Stellar Phoenix BSD Data
Recovery tools, it will scan the disk volume, listed the files and directories and can all be
recovered through command line format. This tool will only support BSD UFS and not Solaris
UFS, even though there are many similarities between the two. For example, you have a disk
located in /usr/bin on /dev/ad1s2a and you want to list, copy and recovered the file and
directories from it. To list the file, in command line, enter ufs2tool 1/2/0 usr/bin and it will list
out the file in that specific disk that you enter. To copy a file, uses the command ufs2tools 1/2/0
-g usr/include/string.h s.h and it will copy a file from the usr/include/string.h to s.h. To retrieve
the /var/log directory and characterized everything by recurrence or repetition to ./log, uses the
command ufs2tool 1/2/0 -g /var/log. User can use the Disk Management tool located in
Computer Management to view their Disk information and determine which partition and slice
they want to work on. Uses the format bsdlabel drive/slice to find the partition that they want
to work on. For example, you want to see partition 1 slice 3, then the command would be
bsdlabel 1/3 and that will list out the partition and slice information. To list a directory
information uses the format ufs2tool drive/slice/partition. So, the command could be ufstool
0/3/0, which stand for drive 0, slice 3 and partition 0 are being listed, which is the root directory.
This command will list out all directories located in the root directory or the directory that was
chosen.
UFS1 UFS2 TOOLS 5
The Kernel for Solaris Sparc Recovery tool is a software that are developed specifically
to recover Unix data. It can also be used to repair corrupted and damaged data and recovered it
to its original form. Corrupt or damaged of group descriptor block, partition structures, super
block or inode table, and volume table of contents, etc... on a UFS file system can cause data loss
on a Unix system. This tool supported many Unix based operating systems, including Solaris
Sparc, Solaris Intel, and SCO OpenServer. The Kernel for Solaris Sparc Recovery can be used
on any Windows system from windows 95 all the way up to the current Windows 10. Like the
other two recovery tool that has been discussed it has the same feature, such as scanning and
extract data. When open the tool, it will display all Unix partitions that have data that can be
recovered, and ask for the user to select the partition that they want to analyze. When click on
the partition, it will analyze and list out the partition model, free size, cylinders, head and sectors
per track. This tool comes with two different searches option, the normal search will be useful
when dealing with a normal UNIX corruption, and the extensive is used when the corruption is
in a more serious condition. Another feature that identifies this tool is that it can restore Unix
data with complete hierarchy. When a user wants to recover inaccessible data from a corrupted
hard disk, it will automatically put it into a hierarchal structure that is easy for the user to identify
the data.
