CHEMICAL PROCESS PRINCIPLES (CLB 10904)

ASSIGNMENT 1 (GROUPING)
(DATELINE: Wednesday, 19 April 2017 before 4PM)

Question 1
The ideal gas equation of state relates absolute pressure, p (atm) ; gas volume, V (liters) ;
number of moles of gas, n (mol) and absolute temperature, T (K):

PV 0.08206 nT

a) Convert the equation to one relating P(psig), V(ft3), n (lb-mole) and T (F).

b) A 30.0 mole% CO and 70.0 mole% N2 gas mixture is stored in a cylinder with a volume
of 3.5ft3 at a temperature of 85F. The reading on a Bourdon gauge attached to the
cylinder is 500 psi. Calculate the total amount of gas (lb-mole) and the mass of CO
(lbm) in the tank.

c) Approximately to what temperature (F) would the cylinder have to be heated to

increase the gas pressure to 3000 psig, the rated safety limit of the cylinder? (the
estimate would only be approximate because the ideal gas equation of state would not
be accurate at pressures this high).

Question 2
The flow rate of a fluid through a nozzle can be determined through an equation as given below. Evaluate
whether the equation is dimensionally homogenous.
DP 2
q = CA
r d

1- 1
d2
Where: q = Volume flowing per unit time
C = Constant with dimensions time per area
d1 = Smaller nozzle diameter
d2 = Larger nozzle diameter
A = Area of nozzle outlet
P = Pressure drop across the nozzle
= Density of fluid

Question 3
A mixture with average molecular weight, M of 54.46 contains 25.0 wt% acetaldehyde (MW 44.05, SG
0.783), X wt% acetone (MW 58.08, SG 0.791) and Y wt% of acetic acid (MW 60.05, SG 1.049).
a. Determine X (wt% acetone) and Y (wt% acetic acid).
b. Calculate the mole fractions of each compound in the mixture.
c. Determine the total number moles of the mixture if it contains 25.0 lbm of acetic acid?

Question 4
30.0 cm3 of oxygen gas (MW 32.00, SG 1.141) is reacted with 30.0 cm3 of ammonia (MW 17.03, SG 0.682) to
produce nitric oxide (MW 30.01, SG 1.340) and water (MW 18.02, SG 1.00). The yield of nitric oxide is found
to be 35%.
i. Write the balanced stoichiometric equation of the reaction.
ii. Determine the limiting reactant.
iii. Calculate the percentage of the excess reactant
iv. Calculate the mass (in gram) of nitric oxide and water produced from the reaction

Question 5
A triple effect evaporator in a plant is used to evaporate water from an incoming salt solution (NaCl + H2O)
stream from 50 mol% to 1 mol% as shown in the diagram 1 below. The evaporator unit is designed to produce
5000.0 metric ton of the salt solution yearly. Assume the plant is operating 350 days yearly and 10 hours daily
and the average molecular weight of that salt solution is 58.04.
H2 O H2O H2O

NaCl & H2O

1 65 mol% NaCl 2 90 mol% NaCl
3

NaCl & H2O

i. Redraw and label the diagram completely with the known and unknown variables.
ii. Calculate the production rate (in mol/s) of the salt solution exiting the triple effect evaporator
iii. Determine the amount of water (mol/s) removed from the salt solution in EACH evaporator

Note to students:
1. This is grouping assignment.
2. Submission must be handwritten with complete solution.
