RESEARCH / TOPIC TITLE :UM - HUM Grade 12 Awareness on Mental Illnesses and UMs Participation in
Information Dissemination as a Way to Break Stigma
Rationale
General: The proposed study deals with the awareness of HUM strain Grade 12 students on
mental illnesses and to find out whether they still subscribe to outdated notions about mental
illnesses and the people who have it.
Specific: It is seen as a way to break the stigma around mental illnesses especially in this day and
age where depression / anxiety related deaths are still looked down upon and not properly
understood by people since even the way it is reported is dumbed down or simplified in such a
way that ignores the fact mental illness is a complex issue.
Grade 12 students in the HUM strain is chosen as the population for the study because aside
from their age group being relatively young and not yet set in their ways, these are also the
students who chose to study arts and sciences, and will likely be future practitioners in the field
of communication.
Conceptual Framework
The researcher expects that the students will have some ideas about mental illnesses, and will
probably even relate to some, such as depression or anxiety; but they might still be into the
notion that it is unmanageable or that people who have certain illnesses like bipolarity cannot be
functional, productive citizens anymore.
Methodology
The researcher will utilize the survey method on finding out the awareness of students on
mental illnesses through a set of guided questions that can be measurable.
The researcher expects to complete the surveys, tabulation, and conclusion within a month.
