CHAPTER 2.
1. Preface
WARNING : THE LIFTING LUGS OF THE CASING ARE FOR LIFTING THESE UNITS
ONLY. WHEN LIFTING THE PUMP AS A COMPLETE UNIT, NEVER USE
THESE LUGS. FAILURE TO OBSERVE THIS PRECAUTION CAN RESULT
IN SERIOUS ACCIDENTS.
WARNING : WHEN LIFTING THE PUMP, USE APPROPRIATE CRANE (OR HOIST)
AND WIRE ROPES. CHECK POSITION AND TIGHTNESS OF WIRE
ROPES SO THAT WEIGHT OF THE PUMP IS NOT UNBALANCED.
FAILURE TO OBSERVE THIS PRECAUTION CAN RESULT IN SERIOUS
ACCIDENTS.
(1) Install suitable pads for surfaces in contact with the cables to
protect painted surfaces.
(2) Handle the equipment carefully to avoid damage to auxiliary piping,
valves, gauges and other instruments installed on the equipment.
(3) After unpacking, if the pump is to be stored, place the pump in a
clean dry room that is free from large temperature variations.
If oil lubricated bearings are used, supply lubricating oil to the
bearings to prevent rust.
2. Operation
2.1 Preparation for Operation
(1) Ensure that the pump is correctly connected to the control panel,
and that functions are satisfactory.
(2) Remove any objects such as wood or wire from the pump suction pit.
(3) Confirm that the water level in the suction pit is above the lowest
level. The lowest level for which the pump can be normally operated
is shown in the General View Drawing. If the level is too low or the
shape of the suction pit is not proper, an air entrained vortex may
be produced, resulting in pump vibration. The water level must be
verified with a water level gauge.
(4) Confirm that the driver turns in the correct direction. The pump
rotates clockwise as seen from above. To check, operate the driver
independently by disconnecting the coupling.
(5) Fill the bearing housing with lubricating oil to the specified level.
(6) Check the auxiliary piping, by referring to Auxiliary Piping
Drawing . It is especially necessary to confirm valve opening or
closing.
(7) Adjust the gland packing so that a small amount of water
continuously leaks. If the gland packing is tightened excessively
or unevenly there is danger that it will seize, so pay particular
attention to this tightening. Before the first operation following
installation, continue water supply more than 10 min. to flush the
water supply system.
(8) Check pump for smooth rotation by manually turning rotor.
2.2 Start-Up
2.3 Operation
(1) Closely check the operating conditions after pump operation begins.
Keep an operation diary, and if there is any trouble, record the
situation in detail.
(2) Although the pump can be operated throughout the specified operation
range, long periods of operation at less than Min. continuous flow
and operation exceeding Max. flow (over load flow) should be avoided.
EBARA is not responsible for problems caused by such operation.
(3) Note any abnormal noise and vibration. If air or foreign matter
enter the pump or if there is a change in the operation point of
the plant or mis-operation and defect of valves in the discharge
lines, abnormal noise and vibration will occur, pump discharge
pressure will vary greatly or the motor current meter will vary
suddenly during operation. In such cases, immediately check these
problems and find the cause. Refer to paragraph 8. Troubleshooting.
(4) After starting operation, note any temperature rise of pump thrust
bearing.
Bearing temperature rises gradually during continuous operation and
is then stabilized after a given time (12 hours).
If abnormal temperature rise is noted, immediately shut down the
pump and investigate the cause.
(5) Ensure that pump bearing lubrication oil level is proper.
Some fluctuation in the oil level can be noted during operation.
(6) If the following occur, immediately check and find the cause.
(a) Motor overload
(b) Start delay
(c) Pump thrust bearing temp.rise : abnormal
(7) Adjust the tightness of the gland bolts so that a small amount of
water will continually leak from the gland without spraying.
(8) Allowable temperature-rise and maximum allowable temperature shall
be as per the following table.
Ambient temp.+45 C 80 C
2.4 Stop
Stop sequence is as follow ;
(1) Stop the pump.
3. Maintenance
To maintain good pump operation, carry out the following maintenance and
checks.
WARNING : KEEP HANDS, FINGERS, HAIR, AND TOOLS AWAY FROM THE ROTATING
PARTS OF THE PUMP IN OPERATION. OTHERWISE, SERIOUS PERSONAL
INJURY MAY RESULT.
WARNING : CUT THE POWER SUPPLY SO THE DRIVER CANNOT BE STARTED BY MISTAKE
AFTER PUMPING STOP.
CAUTION : DRAIN PUMP AND PIPING AS THEY MIGHT CRACK WHEN INTERNAL WATER
FREEZES WHILE STOPPING PUMPING IN WINTER, ETC.
3.2 Inspection
3.2.1 Bearing Housing
When oil level decreases, remove the air vent cap on the bearing cover and
supply oil to the indicated level of the oil gauge on the bearing housing.
Oil should be replaced after 2,000 hours of operation, but at least once
every 6 months regardless of total operating hours.
Proceed as follows for bearing lubrication:
(1) Stop pump operation.
(2) Remove the oil drain plug and the air vent cap on the bearing cover,
and completely drain oil. Re-install plug.
(3) Supply new oil to the indicated level of the oil gauge on the
bearing housing. Re-install air vent cap.
(4) Start the pump.
CAUTION : DO NOT TIGHTEN THE GLAND TO STOP ALL LEAKAGE. A SMALL AMOUNT
OF LEAKAGE IS NECCESARY TO INSURE COOLING AND LUBRICATION OF
THE PACKING AND TO PREVENT SHAFT SLEEVE DAMAGE.
(a) Removal.
Used packing should be removed and discarded. Use the special
tool provided, taking care to avoid damage to the stuffing box
and sleeve. (Fig. 3.1)
Fig. 3.1
(b) Replacement
Stuffing box must be clean and shaft sleeve free of imperfections.
Twist the packing rings open and wind around the shaft sleeve as
shown in Fig. 3.2.
Push the packing rings, one by one, into the stuffing box with the
special tool.

4. Disassembly
Disassembly procedure shall be performed in the following order.
Refer to the Sectional View Drawing and Disassembly and Assembly
Drawing.
WARNING : WHEN LIFTING THE PUMP, USE APPROPRIATE CRANE (OR HOIST) AND
WIRE ROPES. CHECK POSITION AND TIGHTNESS OF WIRE ROPES SO
THAT WEIGHT OF THE PUMP IS NOT UNBALANCED.
FAILURE TO OBSERVE THIS PRECAUTION CAN RESULT IN SERIOUS
ACCIDENTS.
(1) Comfirm that the working area is sufficiently wide and that the
area is sufficiently level for crane use. Check the surrounding
area for hazards or obstructions.
(2) To prevent loss, provide boxes to hold disassembled parts. For
convenience, bolts and nuts removed should be grouped and stored
in separate bags.
(3) Prepare lifting devices, wooden supports, soft pads, standard tools,
special tools, washing oil, rags, liquid packing and anti-rust
oil diluted with solvent for covering machined surfaces of the shaft
and other parts.
(4) Drain oil from the bearing housing.
(5) In many cases, the following parts cannot be reused when the pump is
reassembled, so prepare their replacements in advance;
Rubber rings, O-rings, Gland packing, Taper pin, and Washers.
(b) Use soft padding under the wire to protect the coated or machined
surfaces. Do not raise or lower the parts too rapidly with the
crane.
(c) When disassembling and assembling components on the floor, use
protective blocks under the components to protect the coated
surfaces and prevent rolling( Fig.4.1).
Protective blocks
Fig. 4.1
(2) Protect mating flange surfaces and corners of spigot and socket.
(3) Cover the shaft threads to protect from damage after disassembly.
(4) After disassembly, apply temporary rust prevention to the machined
surfaces such as fitted surfaces, threads, shaft, etc.
(5) Be careful not to drop tools and parts into the sump pit.
(6) To protect against parts loss or mixing of parts with those from
another machine, provide cases for disassembled parts storage.
(7) Store bolts in bags as a set.
(8) The lower bearing casing should be removed from the guide casing
only when the submerged bearings are to be replaced. Similarly, the
shaft sleeves, submerged bearings should be removed only when they
are to be replaced.
4.3 Disassembly
Always inscribe match marks where necessary during disassembly. The
following is the sequence of steps for disassembly :
(1) Disconnect motor wiring, main and small piping around the pump.
(2) Remove coupling bolts, main terminal box and motor.
(3) Remove shaft coupling, distance piece, adjusting nut, thrust
bearing housing cover, key, journal, thrust bearing housing and
deflector.
(4) Remove motor pedestal.
(5) Remove the packing deflector, gland and stuffing box.
(6) Remove the upper column pipe. While lifting up the upper column
pipe, remove the upper shaft and line shaft coupling.
(7) Remove the discharge elbow with companion pipe. While lifting up
the discharge elbow with companion pipe, remove the middle shaft

(12) Remove the submerged bearing housing and lower column pipe.
(13) Remove the bush. Pull the lower shaft from discharge bowl toward
discharge side.
(14) If necessary, remove the sleeve from shaft, submerged bearing from
bearing housing. If necessary, the casing ring can be removed also,
but as far as possible, only remove for replacement.
(15) After disassembly, clean all parts, protect the threaded portion of
the disassembled shaft by wrapping with tape and coat machined
surfaces with anti-rust agent.
(16) Inspect all parts and determine whether repair or replacement is
necessary in acordance with the description in paragraph 3.2.
5. Assembly
Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly while ensuring the match
marks are aligned. In addition, the following instructions must be
observed.
(1) When replacing parts, check thoroughly before assembling.
(2) When reassembling each part, remove foreign matter in the tapped
holes with compressed air and check for defects or dirt on the
flange surfaces and mating surfaces.
(3) Before reassembly, remove anti-rust agent, check for corrosion and
damage.
(4) Generally, replace consumables (such as O rings, rubber rings, gland
packing, washers, etc.) with new parts.
(5) The adjusting nut is the only one with left hand threads. All
other threads are right hand.
(6) The fitted and threaded sections of the bearing housing, shaft, and
the fastening bolts, etc. are to be cleaned thoroughly and a coating
of lubricating oil (Never Seez or equivalent) applied to prevent
seizing.
(7) Use the impeller nut lock washer and the adjusting nut lock washer.
Bend the washers into the notch in the nut to prevent turning.
Washers shall also used on lower bearing housing.
(8) Check the match marks on the casing mating surfaces and the shafts
and couplings.
(9) When connecting the shaft sections, install the socket coupling onto
the upper shaft. Push the socket coupling up until the key can be
set in the key slot of upper shaft side to prevent the socket
coupling from dropping down. Set the remaining key in the key slot
of lower shaft side, and the split rings in the ditch. Then push the
socket coupling down. Install the set screw to prevent the socket
coupling from moving.
(10) Be sure to install the rubber rings for the casing joining surfaces
and the O rings for the stuffing box and in their proper places.
