E-Portfolio Essential V: Healthcare Policy, Finance, and Regulatory Environments

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) created the Essentials of

Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (2008), a document providing nine

Essentials, a curricular framework that outlines the expected outcomes of graduates of baccalaureate

nursing programs. (AACN, 2008, p. 3) The Essentials includes necessary requirements and

recommendations for the core knowledge required of all healthcare professionals (AACN, 2008, p.

3).This passage will focus on Essential V: Healthcare Policy, Finance, and Regulatory Environments

Upon meeting Essential V, the baccalaureate graduate nurse will demonstrate understanding of

healthcare policies including financial and regulatory influence of the healthcare system as important

considerations in professional nursing practice (AACN, 2008, p. 3). For this paper, I will discuss how

my Congressional Letter (Nguyen, 2017) meets the Essential V: Healthcare Policy, Finance, and

Regulatory Environments.

Exemplar

The piece of work I selected to demonstrate understanding of Essential V: Healthcare Policy, Finance,

and Regulatory Environments is my Congressional Letter (Nguyen, 2017). This letter reached out to

Congressional Cummings in an attempt to promote awareness of the healthcare crisis in Baltimore, Md.

With my letter, I was able to demonstrate understanding of healthcare policies, patient care service

organization, finance, and its reimbursement means. I was also able to demonstrate understanding at the

baccalaureate level how healthcare policy is developed and my influence as a nursing student may

allow for potential change. My letter incorporates many aspects from healthcare policies and its

relevance with nursing. I informed a congressional leader about the HIV epidemic and reported

statistical support about the issue addressed. I raised my concern to Congressman Cummings by

informing him residents of Baltimore need increased access to care to allow for better health outcomes

for people living with HIV, and there needs to be a reduction in HIV-related disparities and health

inequities. My suggestion to this issue we can print an article in the community paper educating the

public prevention strategies to reduce the risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV; The article will

highlight HIV-related statistics, our concerns, reachable goals within a given amount of time, and the

outlook for Baltimore if health treatments and education improves.

Reflection

This example relates to Essential V: Healthcare Policy, Finance, and Regulatory Environments because

the assignment illustrated I have understanding of healthcare policies and its influence on the health of

communities, I used evidence-based research and attainable nursing interventions to meet Essential V

(AACN, Pg. 20, 2008). By addressing health related needs I will increase my understanding of

legislative and regulatory processes relevant to the provision of health and its impact of sociocultural,

economic, legal, and political factors influencing healthcare delivery and practice (AACN, Pg. 21,

2008). This project displays my ability to analyze a population and determine healthcare concerns,

suggest attainable nursing recommendations and develop an intervention plan.
