2 Overview
2.1 Introduction
WCDMA is a self-interference system. In this system, a UE causes interference to other UEs
and the uplink interference increases with the UE rate. When multiple HSUPA 2 ms TTI UEs
perform uplink data transmission at a high speed, uplink interference becomes a major bottleneck
to the WCDMA uplink system capacity.
Figure 2-1 Differences between code division scheduling and time division scheduling
2.2 Benefits
The HSUPA Time Division Scheduling feature reduces interference between UEs and increases
the cell uplink throughput when multiple HSUPA 2 ms TTI UEs perform uplink data
transmission at a high speed.
3 Technical Description
Figure 3-1 Code division scheduling timing and time division scheduling timing
The timing alignment, however, leads to DL DPCCH pilot bit alignment and transmitter power
control (TPC) bit alignment and increases the transmit power peak-to-average ratio of RF units.
The number of HSUPA UEs to have their timing aligned needs to be limited to minimize the
impact on the transmit power peak-to-average ratio of RF units. The number can be specified
by the HSUPATDALIGNUENUM parameter in the NodeB MML command SET
ULOCELLMACEPARA. When HSUPATDALIGNUENUM is reached, new UEs may fail
to meet the timing alignment requirement and fail to be selected for time division scheduling.
If you cannot determine whether newly admitted UEs are carried on 2 ms TTI HSUPA, run the
SET UNBMPARA command with the PERFENH_TD_ALIGN_RRC_EFFECT check box
under the PerfEnhanceSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter selected on the RNC side to
make the timing alignment required by HSUPA Time Division Scheduling take effect on these
UEs.
You can also specify the types of UEs that are selected for timing alignment by setting the
HSUPATDSCHENSW parameter in the NodeB MML command SET
ULOCELLMACEPARA. For example, you can select F-DPCH or enhanced F-DPCH UEs
for timing alignment, and you can also select only the UEs performing PS services for timing
alignment. (When sending the Default DPCH Offset Value IE to a UE during a procedure other
than RRC connection setup, the RNC distinguishes between different service types and selects
only the UEs performing PS services for timing alignment.)
NOTE
l If the total number of F-DPCH and enhanced F-DPCH UEs is less than or equal to the value of
HSUPATDALIGNUENUM, F-DPCH and enhanced F-DPCH UEs are selected for timing alignment
based on F-DPCH UEs' configurations.
l If the total number of F-DPCH and enhanced F-DPCH UEs is greater than the value
ofHSUPATDALIGNUENUM, F-DPCH and enhanced F-DPCH UEs are not selected for timing
alignment.
Rate satisfaction equals the ratio of effective rate to SPIweight. The larger the ratio, the higher the rate
satisfaction is.
l When UEs using time division scheduling emerge, the RAN assigns HARQ processes to
these UEs in round robin mode, regardless of their priorities.
l If a UE stops using time division scheduling, the RAN releases the HARQ process assigned
to the UE and preferentially assigns the HARQ process to a new UE that is selected for
time division scheduling. If other HARQ processes are available, the RAN assigns the
HARQ processes to the UE with the lowest rate satisfaction.
l When a new UE is not assigned any HARQ process, the RAN releases some HARQ
processes of the UE with the highest rate satisfaction and assigns the released HARQ
processes to the new UE. If UEs using time division scheduling remain unchanged, the
RAN needs to periodically adjust HARQ processes among them to ensure fairness and
differentiation. As shown in Figure 3-2, during a period of time, eight HARQ processes
are dynamically adjusted among three UEs (UE1, UE2, and UE3) using time division
scheduling. This adjustment helps ensure fairness among the UEs as a whole. Note that
HARQ process adjustment slightly affects the stability of single-user rates.
4 Related Features
Prerequisite Features
l WRFD-01061403 HSUPA 2ms TTI
l WRFD-010636 SRB over HSUPA
Impacted Features
l WRFD-010638 Dynamic CE Resource Management
Use the WRFD-010638 Dynamic CE Resource Management feature with the HSUPA Time
Division Scheduling feature.
If the Dynamic CE Resource Management feature is not used with the HSUPA Time
Division Scheduling feature but the WRFD-021101 Dynamic Channel Configuration
Control (DCCC) feature is, the maximum UE rate is limited when DCCC rate reduction is
triggered. The UEs will not be selected for time division scheduling.
l WRFD-010686 CPC - DTX / DRX
UEs that are selected for time division scheduling cannot use the CPC - DTX / DRX feature.
If the CPC - DTX / DRX feature has been activated for UEs that are selected for time
division scheduling, deactivate the CPC - DTX / DRX feature.
5 Network Impact
System Capacity
The HSUPA Time Division Scheduling feature increases the cell uplink throughput in scenarios
in which multiple HSUPA 2 ms TTI UEs perform uplink data transmission at a high speed in a
cell.
l If the WRFD-010691 HSUPA UL Interference Cancellation feature is not activated, gains
from the HSUPA Time Division Scheduling feature are as follows:
In single-antenna scenarios, the maximum gains (10%-90%) are achieved when all UEs
in the cell are time-division scheduled UEs. There are few or no gains from this feature
when few or no UEs are time-division scheduled UEs. If the Uu resources are
insufficient, the cell throughput gain decreases, and the cell throughput may even be
lower than that before this feature is enabled. The cell throughput decrease helps relieve
the resource insufficiency over the Uu interface. In extreme cases, each UE can use only
one RLC PDU for data transmission. For example, if there are N1 UEs using code
division scheduling and the HSUPA 2 ms TTI in a cell and there are N2 UEs using time
division scheduling, each UE can use only one RLC PDU for data transmission. As a
result, the cell throughput is decreased by (N21)/(N1+N2).
In double-antenna scenarios, gains from this feature are less considerable than those in
single-antenna scenarios.
l If the WRFD-010691 HSUPA UL Interference Cancellation feature is activated, gains from
the HSUPA Time Division Scheduling feature are less considerable.
The HSUPA Time Division Scheduling feature increases the transmit power peak-to-
average ratio of RF units. If the downlink transmit power of the carrier in a cell is
insufficient, this feature reduces the cell's HSDPA throughput by approximately 10%.
Network Performance
The HSUPA Time Division Scheduling feature increases the transmit power peak-to-average
ratio of RF units. If the downlink transmit power of the carrier in a cell is insufficient, the access
success rate and call drop rate in the cell may slightly deteriorate.
With this feature, F-DPCH or enhanced F-DPCH UEs can be selected for timing alignment.
These UEs exclusively use the symbols of a spreading factor. If the symbols of a spreading factor
are occupied, a new spreading factor is required. When the UEs selected for timing alignment
are all F-DPCH UEs, the spreading factors are least efficiently used. A larger number of F-DPCH
UEs that are selected for timing alignment have less impact on the usage of F-DPCH spreading
factors.
6 Engineering Guidelines
l The received total wideband power (RTWP) on the Uu interface is insufficient. That is,
VS.MeanRTWP > BackgroundNoise + Target load 2 dB.
l Two or more HSUPA 2 ms TTI UEs are about to process a large amount of traffic in the
cell.
l The uplink demodulation mode is neither 4-channel demodulation nor economical 4-
channel demodulation.
l The cell is not a multi-RRU cell. This feature does not apply to multi-RRU cells, because
Uu interface resources are not shared across RRUs and therefore enabling UEs served by
different RRUs to use this feature does not provide any gains on the Uu interface.
l The WRFD-141202 Independent Demodulation of Signals from Multiple Small Cell RRUs
in One Cell feature is not activated.
You are also advised to use this feature in indoor scenarios, where gains produced by this feature
are more noticeable. UE mobility causes UEs' data transmission time to partially overlap. If this
occurs, the gains produced by this feature are affected.
RNC Counters
Counter Name Description
Obtain the value of the VS.MeanRTWP counter. The RTWP in a cell is insufficient if the
following inequality is true:
where
NOTE
The MaxTargetUlLoadFactor parameter can be queried by running the RNC MML command LST
UCELLHSUPA.
NodeB Counters
l Calculate the number of HSUPA 2 ms TTI UEs whose average rate is higher than 150 kbit/
s in a cell by adding up values of the counters listed in the following table.
If this number is greater than or equal to two, the HSUPA Time Division Scheduling feature can
be enabled in the cell.
l Obtain the value of the following counter to evaluate cell HSUPA throughput gains from
this feature on the NodeB side.
Network planning
Do not use the HSUPA Time Division Scheduling feature in networks where multiple RRUs
are in the same cell.
Do not use this feature in networks where multiple small cell RRUs are in the same cell.
Do not use this feature in scenarios in which the uplink demodulation mode is 4-channel
demodulation mode or economical four-channel demodulation mode.

----End
Obtain the value of the following counter to evaluate cell HSUPA throughput gains from this
feature on the NodeB side.
This feature increases cell uplink throughput when congestion occurs on the Uu interface. The
value of the VS.HSUPA.Thruput.ROTMor6 counter increases with the value of the
VS.HSUPA.TDMSch.ActRatio counter and the value of the VS.HSUPA.TDMUserNum.Mean
counter. A larger VS.HSUPA.Thruput.ROTMor6 indicates more noticeable gains from this
feature.
Obtain the values of the NodeB counters listed in the following table.
Based on preceding counters, the throughput reached by an HSDPA cell when data transmission
is performed can be calculated as follows:
After the HSUPA Time Division Scheduling feature is activated, the transmit power peak-to-
average ratio of RF units or Mean Non-HSDPA Transmitted Carrier Power for Cell divided by
the maximum cell transmit power increase. If activating this feature causes the HS-DSCH
transmit power and HSDPA throughput to decrease in the cell, you can observe these changes
through the counters in the preceding table.
Drive Test
Gains from this feature can also be monitored by performing a drive test.
1. Perform a drive test during off-peak hours in a single-antenna scenario at a place near the
NodeB to prevent handovers. Activate the HSUPA Time Division Scheduling feature,
enable two to eight HSUPA 2 ms TTI UEs to perform high-speed FTP upload, and measure
the cell HSUPA throughput.
2. In the same drive test environment, deactivate this feature, enable the UEs to access the
network, and measure the cell HSUPA throughput.
3. Repeat the preceding operations more than three times.
Compare the average cell HSUPA throughput before and after feature activation to evaluate
gains from this feature.
