NOTES
TRADITIONAL WORSHIP
As we celebrate this third Sunday in Advent, we
are reminded that this season is not only about
anticipating the birth of the Savior, but more
significantly, waiting and looking for the Lords final
return. Advent is actually about the three advents
of Christ; His coming as an infant, His coming at the
end of the age, and His coming into our hearts. Some
of our carols have to do with various of these themes.
For example, our opening hymn, Joy to the World, is
thought of most often as a Christmas song. It is that,
but it is also a song about the return of the Lord and
of His rule in His eternal kingdom. It is actually more
of a song of Advent. Something else very interesting
occurs in the text of this carol. Have you noticed that
all the verbs in the song are present tense? Why use
present tense verbs in regards to something that is
yet to occur? There is a phenomenon in theology that
is called prolepsis. The concept is bringing a future
action into the present whereby the two are connected
in time. The future action impacts the present. The
future brings benefit to the present. Its as though we
are experiencing His coming presently! In singing, we
have moved outside of earthly time! We are singing
in eternal time. So we can sing of the future rule of
Christ in the present tense because of its certainty and
because our God operates outside of time as well as
within time. Worship transcends all time. We are, after
all, citizens of earth and of heaven at the same time.
Joy to the World reminds us of both! -Dr. Dan Sharp

Reader:
Week by week the light increases as we draw nearer and
nearer to the Saviors birth. This Sunday we light the pink
candle reminding us of joy, the joyful news of Gods stepping
into history and taking on human flesh, bringing salvation and
restoration to the entire created order.
The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.
We have seen His glory, the glory of the One who came from
the Father, full of grace and truth.
Congregation:
Sing, O Daughter of Zion: shout aloud, O Israel! Be glad
and rejoice with all your heart. The Lord has taken away our
punishment; He has turned back our enemy. The Lord, the
King of Israel, is with us, He is mighty to save. Rejoice!
