Michael Jordan Vs. Kobe Bryant
Never say never, because of limits, like fears, are often just an illusion. That is what Michael
Jordan said in an interview after he retired from basketball. He was always trying to live and play
basketball like he and his game has no limits. He inspired a lot of people, not only athletes but
non-athletes who have to face fear and obstacle in their life. Probably the man who grew up to
his level of greatness was Kobe Bryant, but the most of asking still asking questions like, Who
was the better player? Is Michael Jordan the greatest who ever played this game or Kobe took the
lead in that race. Who was the better leader, and who had more achievement in his life?
To begin with, we have to look their background, where they come from and what was the way
they landed in NBA. Michael Jordan born on February 17, 1963, at Brooklyn, New York. In
1977 MJ and his family moved to North Carolina and he learned at Emsley A. Laney High
School in Wilmington. In 1981 Michael joined North Carolina and won 2 National
Championships with the University. Kobe Bryant, on the other hand, was born in Philadelphia,
as the youngest child of the former NBA player Joe Bryant. In his early childhood Kobe and his
family Rieti, Italy, because his father played professional basketball there. In 1992 the Bryant
family went back to the US because of Joes retirement. Kobe joined the Lower Marian High
School, he played 4 years there and recorded a 77-13 record through his last 3 years in the
starting lineup. Michael started his NBA career a little older thank Kobe, in 1984 NBA Draft, the
21 years old Michael selected as the third pick by the Chicago Bulls. Compare to Kobe he
entered later to the league because Kobe got drafted right after his High school years. In 1996 the
Charlotte Hornets selected him as their 13th overall pick, but owing to a lucky coincidence, 5
minutes before he drafted the Hornets traded him to his favorite team from his childhood, the
Los Angeles Lakers. They both got a lot of awards and recognition from their high school and
College years, and they both entered the league with high expectations from the fans and teams.
Secondly, if we want to decide who was the better player we have to examine their NBA
carriers. In his early NBA years Jordan was already a big impact for the Chicago Bulls, in his
first rookie year he averaged 28 points per game and shoot the ball with more 50%. He even
becomes an All-star after the first half of the season, after his first regular season Jordan got
voted and won the Rookie of the Year award, but he and the Bulls fall short against the
Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the postseason. In his sophomore year, he had a season-
ending injury with a broken foot in the 3rd game of the season. Kobe in his first year mostly
came off the bench behind Nick Van Exel, but Bryant was the youngest NBA player of all time
when he was 18 years and 72 days old. By the end of the season, he averaged 15 minutes of play
time. At the end of his first year, he got nominated for the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.
Through to their carriers, they had average or below average seasons but both of their legacy
had 2 main prime times of their carriers, and we call them Three-peat. In their three-peat
seasons, the Bulls (in 1991-199, and 1995-1998) and the Lakers (in 1999-2002) won the NBA
three times in three seasons in a row. They both were leaders of their teams, especially MJ, he
led his team in points per game. He averaged more than 30 points through the six championship
runs and won the Finals MVP (Most Valuable Player) award 6 times and the regular season
MVP 5 times. Bryant almost did the same thing with the Lakers, led his team in assists (6) and
second-best scorer behind his teammate All-time Hall of Fame Shaquille ONeal. Between 2007
and 2010 Bryant totally led his team in every type of statistics and won 2 out of 3 post-season
run with Los Angeles.
Finally, the participation in international competition and championships with the American
national team. Jordan participated in the gold medal-winning Olympic national team. He won a
gold medal while he was a college player in 1984, and in 1992 Summer Olympic games with the
well-known Dream Team. He played on the same team with the best players at that time: Ervin
Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Davis The Admiral Robinson. Kobe also won two gold medals
with the American national team in 2008 (Bejing) and 2012 (London). He was the leader of both
teams with the NBA superstar LeBron James on his side.
When I started playing basketball, and when I grow up I always watched Kobe Bryant on the
TV. Thereby, favorite player and the all-time best basketball player in the world is Kobe Bryant,
but at the other side, I have to admit, what Michael Jordan did and still doing with this sport is
amazing and truly phenomenal. They are both icons and a great example to follow if you want to
achieve big things in your life.
