Bygrave, William D, and Andrew Zacharakis. Chapter 3. Entrepreneurship, John Wiley &

Sons, 2008, pp. 84106.

The chapter I read about was called Opportunity Recognition, Shaping, and Reshaping.

This chapter started out by talking about what to do in the beginning process of starting your

entrepreneurial venture and how to figure out exactly what you want to start and the opportunity

in starting something like that. The next thing it talks about is what to do once you identify what

you are passionate about and basically outlines the following process of finding out your ideas

opportunity and the process leading up to implementing this idea. Commented [DJ2]: Avoid second person, you.

This source is relevant to my inquiry question because I want to figure out how to

become an entrepreneur and this whole chapter talked about how to figure out your passions and

find a way to look for the opportunity in your idea. Reading this chapter was very helpful

because it showed me that if you can find an idea with a decent opportunity and you stick with it

throughout the process then you will have a decent chance at succeeding. How much time and

effort you put into figuring out an idea different from the rest and developing this idea can make

a big difference in if you succeed or not. I plan on reading a couple other chapters in this book

eventually as well but I found this chapter to be most beneficial at this moment because I am

currently in this stage of having to find what I am passionate about and an opportunity from

there.

This book was written by William Bygrave and Andrew Zacharakis. William Bygrave

has written plenty of books on entrepreneurship and has managed, founded, or cofounded

multiple different companies including a pharmaceutical database company, a route 128 venture

high tech company and many more. One of his companies has also won an IR100 award in 1977

proving him to be a credible source and having enough knowledge on this topic. Andrew

Zacharakis, the other author of this book is the John H. Muller, Jr. Chair in Entrepreneurship at

Babson College. He was also the associate editor of a journal on small business management

giving him the credentials to be able to talk about the topic of entrepreneurship and is enough

background to make me believe he is a credible source to listen to. Commented [DJ3]: Omit. Let the facts speak.

Meek, JA. "10 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Start a Business!" Clinical Nurse

Specialist Cns. 28.3 (2014). Print. Commented [DJ4]: Capitalize?

This article was mainly about 10 questions to ask yourself before you start a business.

The article had a lot of very good points on topics such as figuring out an idea that is different

and better than the competitors, figuring how much capital you are going to need to successfully

open this business, and having the passion and perseverance in your idea to continue throughout

the rough moments. Commented [DJ5]: Concise is good, but this is too short.

I wrote down many different things from most of the questions asked in the article and

found the concepts to be very relatable to my topic. I learned that a lot of new entrepreneurs

underestimate the amount of money they need to fully start their business. This is a main reason

a lot of start-ups go out of business quickly because they either start out to big and cant afford it Commented [DJ6]: too

or they just do not plan to spend as much as they end up having to spend to get it started. I also

learned a valuable lesson which is to make sure your product has differential value and is

something that is different from competitors while also benefiting the consumers better and

easier than the competitors. I also learned about how receiving support from everyone close to

you can be a big help in pushing you to succeed while also bringing you new ideas that you may

have never thought of.

This article is a credible source for my project because it is written by Julie Meeks who is

very talented and well-experienced in this topic relating to her medical career. She was the Vice

President, Finance/CFO of Kadlec Regional Medical Center for 28 years and 11 months. I

believe this alone qualifies her to be writing an article such as this one. This also makes a lot of Commented [DJ7]: omit

sense because she had some good ideas and thoughts on finances when starting a business and

she was the CFO for almost 29 years.

Patterson, M. "Building a Brand." Health Facilities Management. 28.10 (2015): 26-30. Print.

This article was about building a brand for your company and finding out what stands out

to customers and will bring them back and can build a connection between the consumer and the

organization. This article mainly was related to health care systems and talked about how the

design of their brands and the buildings themselves can bring in more customers. Commented [DJ8]: Touch on main points. This is too
brief.
Honestly, I would say this was the least helpful cite out of all of them. I would only say I

got a couple of good ideas and information related to my topic. I think the main problem was that

the article mainly talked about healthcare buildings and their designs which did not really help

me with my inquiry but made some sense to me. I understand that if the building of your

business itself looks rough and worn down you will not get as many customers but when it looks

interesting and inviting to customers this can bring in more potential consumers. The article also

gave a little bit of information on how giving customers the best experience that can get will

build a consistent and positive brand image which is very important as well because this allows

you to retain loyal customers as well as bringing in new customers.

The credibility of this article was a little difficult to find information on, but the author,

Mark Patterson is the corporate health practice leader and vice president for SmithGroupJJR in

phoenix. This article was well written and I think made a lot of credible comments that I have

seen supported in other documents. SmithGroupJJR is an architectural, engineering, and

planning firm and they have many notable builds all over the world.

This article is written about Claire Harper who worked her way through multiple

different businesses and eventually opened up her own business, India Coco. The article has

plenty of direct quotes from Harper and basically just talks about her journey to starting her own

business and what some important skills and techniques that someone might need to start their

own business. Commented [DJ10]: Develop this. What were some main
points?
This article gave me a lot of information related to my inquiry question. One thing I

found that I have also seen in a lot of other sources was that professionalism and the customer

are very important when starting a new business. Throughout this article Harper emphasizes that

the customer is a big part of if the business succeeds or not and that giving the customer and

good experience or an easy interface to deal with will greatly increase business. I also think she

went about her starting her business very well as I believe starting online and then moving into

an actual storefront is a great way to start your business instead of going straight into paying for

a store.
5

This article very credible because even though it is not written by Harper herself it has

plenty of direct quotes and comes mainly from Ms. Harper but was just written by someone else.

Harper has credible opinions and ideas on this topic because she has plenty of experience in

business and has started a very successful business herself. Commented [DJ11]: Be more specific about Harper.

This was an article based on a basic question, What do you know? There were four

main sections on different topics related to how to become successful and accomplish your goals

mainly in the business field. The article was mainly about how to stay focused and proactive Commented [DJ13]: summarize the main sections.

when changes occur, how to prepare to be unprepared, and how to run with new ideas that come

up along the way.

I learned some information about how the market and your business will be changing

constantly and new things will always be coming up. Therefore, it is important to know things

will change eventually and be able to deal with them proactively once they come up. It is

important to stay focused and dont let self-doubt bring you down which I have found to

sometimes be a problem for me. This whole article brought me new insight on becoming an

entrepreneur and some of the obstacles I would have to deal with in the process.

After researching I found a lot of information particularly on the article I read that I was

not expecting to find. He inspired over 2 million entrepreneurs each month by being the kick Commented [DJ14]: Who? Name him. Name the author
and his credentials. This is too vague.
start guy and explaining the four-step process I talked about above that he outlined shortly in

the article. I believe this all makes this article credible especially for me because my inquiry

project is looking into how to become an entrepreneur.

Connor,

Your challenge is to get more practice writing summaries. You need to include more

information. While being concise is good, your summaries are too brief. In two of your sources,

you need to be more specific when proving credibility. Use your other sources to guide you

because you did a good job with those.
