Testing procedure for Flite 110SA/ 116SA

Rev 4.0

A) Purpose of the test

The utililty requires to make a lab test before deploying Flite 110SA/ 116SA (referred to as
Flite 11xSA) on its network.

Flite 11xSA operates on two principles:

Electrical field (created by the difference of potential between MV conductor and ground)
Electro-magnetic field (created by the load current through the MV phase conductor)

When installed on a live conductor for the first time (after hardware reset), Flite 11xSA
detects the electrical field and adjust to it. Once it has adjusted and is ready to detect faults,
Flite 11xSA flashes 7 times. The test may then start.

The following procedure recreates the real network conditions:

the 10 kV creates an electrical field
the current injection creates an electro-magnetic field

In this procedure, we make two faults: one using the IMAX principle (absolute current value)
and one using the di/dt principle (variation of load current within 30 ms).

B) Test procedure

1. Connect battery, set DIP switch 6 to ON (Flite 110SA only), and press the reset button
of Flite 11x SA until a long flash appears. Flite 11xSA is now set to show faults. Note:
Flite 110SA differentiates between permanent faults (1 flash every 3 seconds) &
transient faults (1 double flash every 12 seconds)

2. Clip Flite 11xSA clamps on both current injection cable and voltage injection + cable as
it is shown on the picture

3. Put the cable of the voltage injection case about 1 meter below Flite 11xSA to create
the same electrical field as when it is installed on a conductor

4. Voltage self adaptation

Flite 11xSA/ 116SA voltage adaptation prior to testing
When a Flite is brought near a MV line for the first time, as soon as it detects enough
electrical field, it shall start to look for a power frequency (50 or 60Hz).
Once it has found it, it will measure the electrical field and define it as the reference
for voltage detection. To inform the customer that it is self-adapted, it shall flash 7 times.

5. IMAX test
a. Set Flite 11xSA to IMAX=100A and di=OFF, then press reset blue push button
until a long flash occurs
b. Turn on the Voltage injection test set: inject 10kV continuously
c. Within 2mn, Flite 11xSA starts flashing (7 times) to tell it has adapted to MV level
d. Turn on the current injection test and inject 50A continuously
e. Simulate IMAX fault:
i. Increase the current to 120 Amps during a time greater than 30ms
ii. Within 70s, stop both current & voltage injection
iii. The flash must immediately start (one flash every 3 seconds)
f. Inject 10kV again continuously: after 70 seconds, flashing change to 1 double
flash every 12 seconds (indicating transient faults)

6. DI test
a. Set Flite 11xSA to IMAX=200A and di=30A, then press reset blue push button
until a long flash occurs
b. Turn on the Voltage injection test set: inject 10kV continuously
c. Within 2mn, Flite 11xSA starts flashing (7 times) to tell it has adapted to MV level
d. Turn on the current injection test and inject 30A continuously
e. Simulate DI fault:
i. Increase the current to 80 Amps within a time of less than 30ms and
during a time greater than 300 ms
ii. Within 70s, stop both current & voltage injection
iii. The flash must immediately start (one flash every 3 seconds)
f. Inject 10kV again continuously: after 70 seconds, flashing change to 1 double
flash every 12 seconds (indicating transient faults)

Note: it is essential to have the Flite 11xSA far from the current cable of the
loop

7. In case you cannot have 10-20kV injection case

Sometimes difficult to simulate 10 or 20kV, especially if the equipment must be tested in a
temperature chamber.
A solution is to inject directly the required voltage level on Flite 116SA electrical field sensor,
one can easily simulate the MV by modifying the Flite 11xSA:
solder a + terminal to pin number 5 on the connector near the battery connector
solder a terminal to the black wire comin from the battery holder
inject 1 Vac peak (500 mV RMS) into this, the Flite 11xSA should sense the voltage
and flash 7 times (for the initial injection: after, it remembers it has been adapted). Flite
116SA also indicate voltage presence.
