CLUB NEWS
The end of 2017 is almost here, and thanks to the support of all the ANC members and the
Club News and more 8
hardworking staff we have so much to be thankful for. This year our membership numbers
are looking better than they have in years and our revenue from the hotel rooms and food
and beverage is also on the up and up. Both of these factors allow us to continue upgrading UPCOMING EVENTS
the Club while preserving our heritage and history. Thank you for using your Club! Dining Events and more 10
Speaking of upgrades, the lobby bathrooms have been completed for about a month now,
and they are really a great finishing touch to the first floor. Stay tuned for more improvements
as our General Manager has his sights set on the Eagle Grill and fitness facility for 2018. Our COVER STORY
super GM has already brightened the Eagle Grill with a few light touches. Check out the Grill Holidays in the District 12
and join us for the annual Army Navy football game on Saturday, December 9. We had a
lively crowd and fun time last year so I know this year will be terrific! That is just one of many

Before we ring in the New Year, however, we must first make our way through the holiday rush.
As part of that, it is fitting to thank and remember our excellent and loyal staff by donating to Library Trust Fund 15
the Employee Holiday Fund. Please show your appreciation for their great work by continuing
your generous donations as you have in the past. Even up it a little if you can! ON THE COVER
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I also want to remind members that through the Marine Corps Photograph of the U.S. State Capitol

Annual Brunch with Santa. Every year, ANC members go above and beyond, showing their
generosity and brightening Christmas for kids who truly need it. Toys for Tots accepts gifts
for children ranging from toddler to 17 years of age, and always makes a special plea for toys
for older kids as they often get overlooked. Reservations are still available for this great event
on Sunday, December 10.
Last, remember that all resident members should keep a look out for New Years Day
Reception tickets. Of course it is a Club highlight. Every members ticket is good for
them and a guest, and should be in your mailbox towards the end of this month. Any
non-resident members who will be in the area and are planning to attend the January
1 Open House can contact the Membership Department at 202-355-0520 to request
and receive their complimentary ticket. Guest tickets are also available for purchase.
I look forward to spending this holiday season with you at the Club!
Back in 1997, a Clinton was in the White House, a quarterback named Jeff Hostetler was trying to get the Redskins back on
top and the iPhone was simply a notion in Steve Jobs imagination. Closer to home, our Main Dining Room at the ANC was
honored by Washingtonian Magazine for having The best place to host an event in the Nations Capital. The world has
changed in the past two decades, but the one constant that endures is the excellence of the ANC dining experience and
consistently impressive member and private event options.
I cant believe it has been 20 years since the Washingtonian Award, said Colonel James Bracken. That was back in the day
before blogs, posts and tweets. The Award was like a massive megaphone. It created an explosion of interest in The Army
and Navy Club. We have been able to maintain our high food and wine standards while keeping our prices down. In fact, we
have just lowered all of our entre prices on our new fall dinner menu.
The Army and Navy Club continues to be not just a global Platinum Club destination, but a key part of both Washington,
DCs identity and our nations military history. It is more than awards and honors. It is about making our members happy.
Something the ANC team has done, grandly, for over 130 years.

A HISTORIC LANDMARK
OOPS!
BY: COL JAMES A. BRACKEN, USMC (RET.) | CLUB VICE PRESIDENT & HISTORIAN
The Army and Navy Club building facing 17th Street and I Street
The designation was made because our building was considered to
be of value as it contributed to the cultural heritage and visual
beauty of the District of Columbia, and was oriented...toward
Farragut Square. In making the designation, the Joint Committee
on Landmarks of the National Capital further stated that the Clubs
open, outward aspects of social rooms established a human
scale and historical point of reference where slick glass office
buildings have almost totally displaced one of the finest residential
neighborhoods of the city.
A year before the designation was made, our Club Secretary read
a news article in the local press reporting the Districts initiative to
establish a program for historic designation of qualified buildings.
His interest stirred, the Secretary made a phone call and asked for more information. A District official returned the call
requesting a tour of the Club. After a cordial briefing, an enlightening tour and a good lunch, the apparently impressed
official responded by sending a letter in mid-May of the following year informing the Secretary that a review of The Army
and Navy Club would be on the agenda of the June 4, 1974 meeting of the Joint Committee on Landmarks.
Unaware of these proceedings, and none too pleased when he was informed, our then President, Lieutenant General
William McCaffrey, USA (Ret.), quickly determined that designation as a historic landmark would place the Club in a status
where any changes to our building would require local, if not national, government approval. This raised an immediate
alarm because at the time the Club was exploring several possible courses of action, up to and including demolition, to
renovate and rebuild our 62-year-old deteriorating building. If demolition became the Clubs chosen course of action, under
the Districts building code, a 180-day delay and comment period would be required after issuance of a demolition permit.
Confronting the dilemma, General McCaffrey, on May 29, 1974, chose his course of action by having a letter hand carried
to the Joint Committee pointing out that The Army and Navy Club had never actually requested a historical landmark
designation. He asked the Committee to take no further action until, if and when, the Club made a formal request for such
a designation. Much to his distress, the request was never acknowledged and on June 4, 1974, The Army and Navy Club
building was designated a Historic Landmark, Category III.
Nine years passed before the Club did decide to demolish and rebuild. Fortunately, by then, the 180-day waiting period
requirement had been rescinded. Yet, as often happens in dealing with bureaucracy, there was still restrictive reluctance by
the District of Columbia to allow the demolition.
With some effort, an agreement was negotiated with the authorities allowing demolition and construction to proceed with
the stipulation that the architect retain the two outer walls of the existing building facing 17th Street and I Street. Thus, to
the satisfaction of all parties, and most surely to the relief of the once Club Secretary, The Army and Navy Club building kept
its original design integrity, while maintaining the historic impact of its structure and ever contributing ...to the cultural
heritage and visual beauty of the District of Columbia.
