Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness

VERSE 5.1:-
In the Second Chapter, preliminary knowledge
of the soul and its entanglement in the
material body were explained. How to get out
of this material encagement by buddhi-yoga,
or devotional service, was also explained
therein. In the Third Chapter, it was
explained that a person who is situated on
the platform of knowledge no longer has any
duties to perform. And in the Fourth Chapter
the Lord told Arjuna that all kinds of
sacrificial work culminate in knowledge.
However, at the end of the Fourth Chapter,
the Lord advised Arjuna to wake up and
fight, being situated in perfect knowledge.
He appears not to have understood that work
in full knowledge is nonreactive and is
therefore the same as inaction.
CCP:-
Chapter 4 on knowledge is sandwitched
between 3 and 5 of karma yoga.
Karma sanyasa yoga ,sanyasa in karma.
Action can lead to liberation if done
intelligently.
Theme of 3rd and 5th chapter is same, more
depth in 5th .
Atma jyana helps one to avoid further
bondage ,paramatma jyana leads to
liberation.
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
As long as one is engaged in activities
aimed at improving the standard of bodily
comfort, one is sure to transmigrate to
different types of bodies, thereby
continuing material bondage perpetually.
jna (or knowledge that one is not this
material body but spirit soul) is not
sufficient for liberation. One has to act in
the status of spirit soul, otherwise there
is no escape from material bondage.
Renunciation is complete when it is in the
knowledge that everything in existence
belongs to the Lord and that no one should
claim proprietorship over anything.
One who knows that everything is Ka's
property is always situated in renunciation.
VERSE 5.2:-
CCP:-

Krishna is saying both will lead to long

term benefit but karma yoga is better than
jyana as it is easy.
Material body gives insignificant pleasure
but significant pain.
VERSE 5.3:-
CCP:-
One doesnt hanker or resent, free from
duality he is real sanyasi.
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
This happen by inner detachment.
Externally inactivity seems easy but it is
very difficult,activity looks difficult but
it is easy.
VERSE 5.4,5:-
The aim of the analytical study of the
material world is to find the soul of
existence. The soul of the material world is
Viu, or the Supersoul.
By Skhya philosophical research one comes
to the conclusion that a living entity is
not a part and parcel of the material world
but of the supreme spirit whole.
Consequently, the spirit soul has nothing to
do with the material world; his actions must
be in some relation with the Supreme. When
he acts in Ka consciousness, he is
actually in his constitutional position. In
the first process, Skhya, one has to
become detached from matter, and in the
devotional yoga process one has to attach
himself to the work of Ka consciousness.
Factually, both processes are the same,
although superficially one process appears
to involve detachment and the other process
appears to involve attachment. Detachment
from matter and attachment to Ka are one
and the same. One who can see this sees
things as they are.
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
CCP:-
Diversity of path but uniformity of goal,
not all path lead to same goal.
Karma and jnana are equal as the goal is
same.
Jnana may be higher in spiral but both lead
to same goal, liberation.
We see with the knowledge .
What we can know depends on what we know.
Whatever we hear we should be able to
connect wit what we know then we can
understand .
Arbitarily study of BG is not useful one has
to study systematically.
Although externally jnani is detached and
karmi yogi appears to engaged but the goal
is same.
Sankhya is like finding the root then
watering it but devotional service is
directly watering the tree understanding
from authority.
VERSE 5.6:-
Sannysa gives suffering for the jn who
cannot fix complete purity in his heart.
Karma-yoga however gives pleasure.
pramdino bahi citt piun kalahotsuk
sannysno pi dyante daiva-
sanditray.
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
One sees sannyss who are absorbed in sense
gratification, with evil minds, fond of
arguing, who are contaminated shelters of
spiritual life.
yadi na samuddharanti yatayo hdi kma-ja
Members of the renounced order who fail to
uproot the last traces of material desire in
their hearts remain impure, and thus You do
not allow them to understand You. SB

false pride and intoxication, whose
intelligence, the leader of the senses, is
extremely attached to material things, who
is bereft of knowledge and detachment, who
adopts the sannysa order of life to make a
living, who denies the worshipable demigods,
his own self and the Supreme Lord within
himself, thus ruining all religious
principles, and who is still infected by
material contamination, is deviated and lost
both in this life and the next. SB 11.18.40
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
CCP:-
Inactivity is difficult
,troublesome,unnatural so troublesome, if
not connected with the absolute.
Now we avoid using the word cult as now it
has got the neagative conotation, people who
are brain washed, doing the weird things.
VERSE 5.7:-
A man of controlled senses cannot be
offensive to anyone.
CCP:-
People may be mayavadi by affiliation but
not by inclination.
If one is not detached then even if he goes
to forest he lives with six wives five
senses and mind.
If one not attached then even if he stays in
palace is not entangled.
Selfish :- thinking what canhe do for me.
Selfless;- what can I do for him.
Material;- how he can help me in sense
gratification.
Spiritual ;-getting blesssings for
advncement.
VERSE 5.8,9:-
CCP:-
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
Karma and jnana are equal but karma is easy.
Karma keeps one free from bondage by fixing
on atma.
Tattvavit knows that simply senses are
coming in contact wit sense object.
Automatically means absense of awareness of
control.
Many things happen in body without our being
aware of it.
Both at scintific and philosophical level we
can understand that im not the doer.
Scintific many things in body happen without
our being aware of them like digestion.
Philosophical changing body one funtion as
per new body .
NOT DOER means not the independent doer.
Soul is initiating cause.instrument is the
executor like voice box,parmatma is
sanctioning cause.
Suffering:- material nature instrumental
cause,soul initiating cause,lord sanctioning
cause.
There are some inevitable needs of body that
will be done beyond that no entanglement in
sense grstification.ex;- eat to live no
bondage ,eat to enjoy then bondage.
VERSE 5.10:-
a person without Ka consciousness acts
according to the concept of the material
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
body and senses, but a person in Ka
consciousness acts according to the
knowledge that the body is the property of
Ka and should therefore be engaged in the
service of Ka.
CCP:-
brahman for bhakta is bhagavan.
for karma yogi will work with understanding
that brahman is material nature.
When one doesnt get emotionally involved
thinking Im the doer, then he is not
entangled in reaction.
LINK :- then what will be motivation for action
- purification.
VERSE 5.11:-
When one acts in Ka consciousness for the
satisfaction of the senses of Ka, any
action, whether of the body, mind,
intelligence or even the senses, is purified
of material contamination.
There are no material reactions resulting
from the activities of a Ka conscious
person.
CCP;-
People serve god at level of fear (god may
punish me), desire (god will give me
something), duty (sadhana bhakti).
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
Kevalai= at least the senses/even the
senses.
Senses which normally cause bondage can
cause liberation if used in Krishnas
service.
Senses now cause us agony but can give
ecstasy in pure stage in journey from agony
to ecstasy we have to tolerate.
Bhakti is sensory spirituality.
Jivan mukta= within the body but liberated
as has no material attachment.
Videha mukta = left the body and gone back
to godhead.
Gunatita and swarupa sidddha, both legs in
spiritual world.
Gunatita but not the swarupa sidddha, one
leg in material world one in spiritual.
Not Gunatita not swarupa sidddha, both leg
in material world but eyes fixed on
spiritual world.
VERSE 5.12:-
CCP:-
Comparison between Fruitive worker and karma
yogi is made here.
Not the action but motivation causes
bondage.
Person with no selfish motivation doesnt
get bondage.
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
Dont think that you will get peace by not
fighting the war as long as one has material
attachment one doesnt get the peace.
By acting in karma yoga without attachment
one can get the unflinching peace.
VERSE 5.13:-
The soul, although subjecting himself to
the conditions of the body, can be beyond
those conditions, if he so desires.
CCP:-
To the extent we think tha Im going to
enjoy we think we are the doer and to
that extent we get bound.
Entry and exit point of body causes us to
interact with the external world,and
causes bondage so the the emphasis is
given on nine gates.
Necesarry activity need to be done but
should not be emotionally involved.
Ksatriya body is going to act according
to its nature so will have to fight but
should not identify with ksatriya
body, and not get bound ,act but dont get
emotionally involved.
VERSE 5.14:-
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
Jiva is not the doer lord is not the doer
but svabhava of jiva with impressions since
time immemorial Is the doer.
CCP:-
Soul is not doing the things but if he
thinks im the doer then he has to get
reaction of results.
Svabhava will act but one should not
identify with it.
Modes will toss us up and down but we havet
osteady our krishna connection.
LINK :-Is the supreme lord responsible for my
acting in particular way?
VERSE 5.15:-
Vaiamya-nairghye na spekatvt tath hi
darayati: The Lord neither hates nor likes
anyone, though He appears to. Vednta-stras
(2.1.34)
The Supreme Lord simply engages the jva in
activity according to the jvas
impressionsa jva who desiring to enjoy,
bound up by beginningless impressions in the
pradhna, takes a body made of a
transformation of pradhna just by proximity
to the Lord.
Smell brings about disturbance to the mind
by proximity with the mind, not because of
doing anything. In the same way the Supreme
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
Lord also acts in relation to the living
entities without thoughts of disturbing
them. Just as by proximity, ether and time
are causes of a tree without their
undergoing transformation, so Bhagavn is
the cause of the universe without His
undergoing contact or transformation. Viu
Pura 1.2.30-1.
na karmvibhgd iti cen nnditvt
You cannot say the Lord is just, because He
gives them different karmas to each jva at
the beginning. But that is not so, because
karma is without a beginning. Vednta Stra
2.1.36.
CCP:-
What is the nature /svabhava by covering
of ignorance living entity causes self
defeating activities/self destructive
activities.
What is ignorance one type is lust, pride.
By ignorance the soul forgets who Im and
identifies with the body.
Three factor soul, supreme lord and the
material nature.
Although nature makes us act in particular
way some urges can be curtailed and some can
be dovetailed.
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
Varnic propensities can be dovetailed in
Krishnas service like brahmanical
tendencies.
Certain propensities like lust, anger greed,
need to be curtailed.
We will have certain propensities but we
should not identify with it and become
elated or depressed.
Like if brahmanical will have good memory
eloquent speaking but should not become
proud and if Sudra not able remember then
should not be depressed. Every nature can be
used in the lords service.
We should know that this bodily nature and
it will act in particular way but Im spirit
soul meant to serve the lord. We should not
get caught up In our particular nature.
Lord facilitates our desire.
When we understand that we are beyond this
body then it expands our vision.
LINK;- how to become free from this ignorance.
VERSE 5.16:-
Even though a person may be in full
knowledge that he is not this body but is
transcendental to the body, he still may not
be able to discriminate between the soul and
the Supersoul.
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
Identity with individuality in spiritual
life is real knowledge.
The qualities of prakti are the causes of
bondage in the form of instigating the jva
to become the doer and the enjoyer, and they
are the causes of liberation in the form of
such qualities as detachment and peace.
CCP:-
When karma yogi practices with detachment
then gradually knowledge comes about supreme
lord to surrender him serve him.
As we become purified sun of spiritual
wisdom rises in our heart and clarity comes,
inner world becomes clear and comprehensive.
Tat param that absolute truth is revealed.
Jnana in soul is covered but when he comes
in contact with SP that knowledge is reveled
and destroys the ignorance .
By contemplation one may may know the soul
but to know the lord one needs the help of
guru.
Oneness is sign of ignorance as in dark
everything is one but by the light one sees
things as they are.
Variety in existence but unity in purpose of
serving the lord.
LINK:- what to do when got the knowledge.
VERSE 5.17:-
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
it is understood that tma jna is not
enough to give liberation. Bhakti, producing
Paramtm realization, is also necessary for
liberation.
CCP:-
variety in existence but unity in purpose
that is serving krishna.
Our consciousness moves in four lane but if
there are four direction then we loose
focus.
We have to direct our 1) intelligence:- by
understanding futility of material
enjoyment,scriptural knowledge,conviction
that krishna is ultimate
reality,philosophical contemplation these
are the ways to direct intelligence to
krishna. 2) mind:- in krishna consciousness
here atma refers to mind we have to put our
emotions in practice of krishna
consciousness,3)nishta/faith:- not just
putting mind and intelligence but having
faith in process/practice 4)tat parayana:-
making goal the lord .
Ex chanting intelligence understanding the
importance of chanting mind- welcoming the
krishna while chanting
Nishta- having faith that holyname ca
deliver me tat parayana;-making krishna the
goal.
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
Tat parayana ;- Goal of spiritual life is to
make the spiritual life our goal.
Wandering four lanes intelligence;- having
faith in krishna but also thinking science
is also good doubt may arise mind :-
chanting dancing but also the mind wants to
watch the cricket nishta :- faith in krishna
but thinking material is also good tat
parayana:- want to go BTG but also achive
here materially btg not the first goal.
Evolving consciousness, initialy sadhya:-
temporary things of this world then sadhya:-
with little spiritual understanding want
eternal world but also the material things
then sadhya;-only the eternal world ready to
give up this world, then again it evolves
from brahman understanding to bhagavan
understanding.as sadhya evolves sadhana also
evolves, when this world is goal then
sadhana is karmakand but now people are
doing vikarma.when eternal goal is
identified then yoga comes in picture from
sakama karma-wants both temporary and
eternal nishkama karma yoga :- focuses more
on eternal jnana yoga ;- conceptionof
eternal truth is brahman dhyana yoga ;-
conception of eternal truth is paramatma
then in bhakti ;- bhagavan conception then
only the kevala bhakti .
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
LINK:- when all faculties are focused on lord
how does one sees this world .
VERSE 5.18:-
CCP:-
Although difference of modes ,actions duty
alearned transcendentalist sees all equally.
Having equal vision doesnt mean equal
reciprocation,equality can be gained by
seeing the atma tattva.
There are many sectarian conflicts but can
be resolved by these understanding.
ISKCON is example of this verse.
What is the result of equal vision.
VERSE 5.19:-
CCP:-
Here nirdoesha means beyond the modes.
When one sees everything qually then there
is no attachment.
Being in the state of sama is like already
liberated.
LINK :- krishna now desribes the process
VERSE 5.20:-
The first symptom of self realised person is
that he is not illusioned by the false
identification of the body with his true
self.
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
not joyful in achieving something, nor
lamenting in losing anything which is
related to his body. This steadiness of mind
is called sthira-buddhi, or self-
intelligence.
Above state can be attened when ones
intellect is fixed in atma.
CCP:-
To be equipoised in happiness or distress is
the theme repeatedly talked in BG by
krishna.
This is the test of advancement in krishna
consciousness.
LINK:- how one can come to this state, both
descriptive and prescriptive verses.
VERSE 5.21:-
a person engaged in Ka consciousness can
work with greater vigor without sex
pleasure, which he avoids. That is the test
in spiritual realization.
Spiritual realization and sex pleasure go
ill together
CCP:-
Brahma yoga means connected to brahman.
Steps- detaced from external sense pleasure-
turning inwards, connecting with krishna- by
connection with krishna unlimited happiness.
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
Ultimately materialist are working for sex
pleasure.
Sexual pleasure is physical but spiritual
pleasure is transcendental ,when we are
cought with bodily consciousnesss we cannot
get spiritual pleasure,by identifying with
soul one is relieved of this sex attraction.
With experience of inner happiness we can
give up outer happpines, first give up outer
/innner happiness actually 1st is hearing
understanding reality,futility of sensual
pleasure.
If our hearing is weak then gradually we
will become slack loose taste in
chanting,become weak and falldown.
LINK:- why give up outer pleasure because they
lead to misery.
VERSE 5.22:-
The more one is addicted to material
pleasures, the more he is entrapped by
material miseries.
CCP:-
Three possibilities in sense pleasure 1) not
attainable always, hanker but may not be
able to get it 2) attain but not palatable ,
may get by hard work but may not be upto
expectation 3) not retainable cant enjoy for
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
long, as bodies capacity to enjoy is
limited.
Sense pleasure 1st hankering- so much pain
then tiny little pleasure- then lamentation
it got over.( sandwitch 0f sense pleasure)
(hankering-little pleasure-lamentation.)
Sense pleasure is pregnant with misery.(
dukha yonaya)and even cant abort ,when enjoy
sense pleasure then sure to get the misery.
That AT which gives unlimited happiness and
also delight in unlimited happiness is
called RAMA. ( ramante yogino)
Prabhupad qouted rishabhadevas verses very
frequently.
Human should not strive for sense pleasure
enjoyed by hogs.
At transition to give up sense pleasure and
gain transcendental pleasure there is the
struggle but when one goes through that
pleasure then one gets it.
LINK:- but my desire to enjoy dont go away then
just tolerate.
VERSE 5.23:-
If one wants to make steady progress on the
path of self-realization, he must try to
control the forces of the material senses.
CCP:-
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
Urges from lust and anger should be
tolerated till body is there.
As we become more andmore purified the
struggle becomes more n more managable.
Tolerance is the war betweeen temptation and
transsgretion, one can be tempted but should
not cross line and engage in sense
gratification.
Tolerance is strength, lack of tolerance is
slave to urges.
Temptation means we are disconnected from
krishna. Ex speed brakers on american roads
for off track vehicle so one has to come
back on the track.
During temptation one should do
retaliation,remember phiosophy/see picture
of lord /remember shloka/ sing some bhajan
these are weapons one should have ready
stock of these weapons, whichever works for
onesels.
When we strave the temtation it will roar
but is becoming weaker.
Desire will not go away by their own but by
denial will become weaker.
Starve the mind.happiness will be by
detachment not by engagement.
People work streniously to fulfill their
desire but devotees streniously avoid them.
For devotees work is inner.
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
Even if one fulfill th edesire the pleasure
is temporary but if one transcends the there
is unlimited pleasure.
LINK :- turning inwards.
VERSE 5.24:-
Unless one is able to relish happiness from
within, how can one retire from the external
engagements meant for deriving superficial
happiness? A liberated person enjoys
happiness by factual experience.
He can, therefore, sit silently at any place
and enjoy the activities of life from
within.
CCP:-
Brahma nirvana :- karmi life ends ith
death, jnani- life begins with death
bhakta life begins when we start serving
krishna , brahma nirvana.
Brahma nirvana :-
This word comes many times in BG.
Simultaneous revival of spiritual existence.
Devotees happiness is factual not
sentimental,soul comes in contact with
krishna and experience the happiness.
We replace memory of sense gratification
with spiritual experiences.
We should memorise transforming realization,
and externally should note in some diary
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
VERSE 5.25:-
When a person is actually in the knowledge
that Ka is the fountainhead of
everything, then when he acts in that spirit
he acts for everyone.
The sufferings of humanity are due to
forgetfulness of Ka as the supreme
enjoyer, the supreme proprietor, and the
supreme friend. Therefore, to act to revive
this consciousness within the entire human
society is the highest welfare work.
The real cause of one's difficulties in the
hard struggle for life may be found in one's
forgetfulness of his relationship with the
Supreme Lord.
CCP:-
Spiritualist is well wisher of all living
being, seeing everyone to be part and parcel
of lord.
Unless freed of impurities cannot do welfare
to others.
Helping also need some level of
understanding about what is real help.
First ksina kalmasa then sarva bhuta hite
ratah..
LINK: - how such person will eventually attain
liberation.
VERSE 5.26:-
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
CCP:-
Lust N anger are the inner enemy.
One has to control both lust and anger,
jnani Control Ocean of lust but they drown
in the puddle of anger.
We should have desire to serve not just
controlling desires, otherwise it will come
out in bad way.
Where lust comes sooner or later anger
comes, anger is kamanuja..
Purification is important rather than just
shifting from one hankering to other on
material platform.
We have to remove anarthas from mental
level.
Very important to remember Krishna.
Sense control is common for all path, way
may be different.
How to become yat cetasam4.22.39 yat pada
pankaja palasa.. One should delight in the
lotus feet of lord by chanting; dancing,
serving deitiesrenunciation doesnt mean
not feeling happiness.
Test of happiness is I continue even if
there is no happiness.
Trying to empting the mind is like drying
the coast, it is not possible as impressions
are there, sense objects are there, so we
have to fill the mind with Krishna.
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
Rather than pulling out the mind of material
desires fill the mind with spiritual
desires.
Give lust no time be always be busy.
Thinking too much about not doing also leads
to do it, delight in Krishna consciousness.
Example of fish, tortoise, and birds look at
the principle not factuality.
LINK: - how one can attain Brahma nirvana by
astanga yoga.
VERSE 5.27-28:-
When one is well situated in devotional
service, one comes to the transcendental
position, qualified to feel the presence of
the Lord in the sphere of one's activity.
This particular position is called
liberation in the Supreme.
CCP:-
Sparsha here refers to contact with any
sense object.
Both external and internal control is
described.
Raga attachment I want to enjoy this
world, krodha who will stop me from
enjoying it bhaya dont know what is there
in spiritual realm.
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
Renounciation out of hatred will not sustain
but it should be due to attraction to other
world.
VERSE 5.29:-
The greatest peace formula is simply this:
Lord Ka is the beneficiary in all human
activities.
The eightfold yoga mysticism is
automatically practiced in Ka
consciousness because the ultimate purpose
is served.
CCP:-
Peace formula is to accept the Krishna as
the proprietor, enjoyer and master of
everything.
How? Peace is possible only when people
become internally satisfied.
Before peace in the world we have to make
peace with the god, trying to be independent
enjoyer is like having the war with the god.
Resentment due to not working of plan can go
to others hurting others, if goes inwards
then people become depressed, goes upward
blaming the lord.
Understanding Krishna is well wisher of all
living being then resentment for lord goes
away, we become clearer and get deep peace.
Resentment in any way is not good.
Chapter 5 Action in Krishna consciousness
What happened is happened, what gone wrong
is gone wrong I have present with me, I can
do something now?
Understanding that Krishna is well wisher of
all can relieve our mental trouble
completely.
Conflicts happen due to being possessive.
All wars are due to being possessive.
Krishna is master Im his servant helps one
to advance.
