Being a Professional

Introduction

In our environment is common that in many of the occasions we hear the word
professional, but, do we really know what is its meaning? Do we know who are
professional? Do we know how to distinguish them?

Answering the first question, we have: the dictionary of the Spanish language defines
as professional the person who exercises his profession with relevant capacity and
application. It differs from an amateur. (RAE, n.d)

In this essay, we will answer the rest of the questions posed, as well as others,
addressing some concepts of professional and we will describe some of the characteristics
that this must have to make a difference.

"Professional" is an etiquette that not all people can use owing to that for become one
must go a long way, which takes unity internal and motivation, and isn't simply matter of
an event. (TEDxYouth, 2013)

A professional is a person who has achieved a high level of knowledge, experience

and skills, which allows him in a task, project or activity, to emit a judgment, a decision.
This is the highest level that can offer a professional. (TEDxYouth, 2013)

Being professional isn't reserved for certain people, but that it's exposed to anyone in
the world, this because being professional, more than knowledge, skills and experience,
is matter of attitudes, behaviors and actions. (TEDxYouth, 2013)

These three characteristics are related to each other and conform a positive closed loop
in the following way: attitudes drive the behaviors, behaviors drive actions and it's these
actions that reinforce attitudes. (TEDxYouth, 2013)

In addition to these characteristics that a professional must possess, there are four
aspects that frame to one: knowing, doing, helping and learning. (TEDxYouth, 2013)

Knowing, for a professional it is important to learn everything can and as much as him
can, this is necessary for when the Doing comes. Once new knowledge have settled or
reinforced is necessary to put them into practice as this leads us to generate skills. When
a professional combines his knowledge and his skills, it is possible to have a clearer visual
about a problem, which allows him to give multiple solutions (each one better than
another). (TEDxYouth, 2013)

Helping, when a professional collaborate in an activity with another professional this

can learn from his or her skills, attitudes, etc. This helps strengthen his judgment.
(TEDxYouth, 2013)

Finally, Learning, a professional must have the commitment to follow continuous

learning, every moment must update their knowledge and skills. (TEDxYouth, 2013)

The knowledge and skills that were useful yesterday might not be for tomorrow.
(TEDxYouth, 2013)

Conclusions

The concept of professional is a broad and extensive topic to cover, this label that is
given to a person is due to his experience that have taken him to where he is. This is
something that anyone can achieve and depends solely on the motivation you have to
achieve it.

In addition, a person can count on skills that will be of great importance in their
working life; these skills are what make a good professional (one who unites their skills
and experience).

All the time a continuous learning must be given, to be able to reinforce and increase
their capacities.
