PLANNING
Unit Title Multiplication
Subject Area Math
Lesson Title Multiplication Strategies
Length of Lesson 30 Minutes
Audience Description Number of students: 6
Race: African American
English Language Proficiency: There are no ELL students in this group. Every student has
good verbal language.
Gender: 5 Female and1 Male
Exceptionalities: One student has an IEP for reading and writing.
Cultural Considerations: Students are all free and reduced lunch. Many have experienced
violence at their young age. Many come from single parent homes.
Other information: We are only going up to 8 with our multiplication lesson. We will then start
division and loop back to higher multiplication.
IEP Goals (where List the IEP goals for the student(s) as it pertains to this lesson.
available) One student has IEP goals for writing and reading but not math.
Objectives
The student will demonstrate the commutativity of multiplication, and practice related facts by
skip-counting objects in an array model.
Represent and solve problems involving multiplication.
Standards
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.1
Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 7 as the total number of objects in 5
groups of 7 objects each

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.B.5
Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide.
Assessment (formative Formative: I will perform several check ins and turn and talks to assess mastery. I will
and/or summative) also be observing the workbooks and graphic organizers they will be filling out.
Summative: District assessed benchmark made of four questions to assess mastery
will be given after another day of review. They must pass 3 out of the four questions to
be considered mastered.

Resources (texts,
technology, materials, Dry erase boards, graphic organizers/worksheets, You Tube video.
etc.)
Incorporation of other ELA due to reading the word problems.

assessment) changing directions. (3 minutes)
We will review and practice concept development by skip counting, writing the numbers on the
dry erase board, drawing an array to match our count and discussing how many rows and
columns we see. They will also write the multiplication sentence. Students will conference
with their shoulder partner before showing me their answers. We will then rotate our boards
90 degrees and discuss how the array has changed
Next, students will practice with partners using the following examples. Partner A gives skip
counting directions and partner B writes the count, draws array and writes the multiplication
sentence. Then, partners will switch roles.

I will then introduce their multiplication strategies workbook. We will discuss repeated addition,
grouping, arrays and skip counting. On each page they will write the equation and the
specified strategy to go with it.

Closure # Of minutes: 5
Students will compare their Multiplication strategies workbook at the end of the lesson. If time
allows, they will come up with their own multiplication sentence and show the four strategies for
their equation.

At a later time, students will be assessed through the district created benchmark to show mastery
of the topic. See above under assessment.
