1.2 Major Enhancements

1.2.1 Load Flow Analysis

Automatic step size adaptation in the load flow algorithm is now executed per isolated area.
Convergence progress of each area is now independent of other areas. (#18975)

1.2.2 Power Equipment Models

Line loads (ElmLodlvp):

It is now possible to define line loads (ElmLodlvp) for all AC line types, including two- and
single-phase lines. Unbalanced line load definition is also supported.
Voltage dependency of line loads can now be specified in the type. Previously, line loads
were always treated as constant current loads. Now, line loads are considered as constant
power loads if Consider voltage dependency of loads is not selected in the Load Flow
command. This may cause different load flow results compared to previous PowerFactory
versions. See the Technical Reference for further details. More details are available in the
Whats New document. (#18603)

A new HVDC LCC element has been introduced. More details are available in the Whats New
document. (#18605)

Synchronous motor (ElmSym): New improvements have been made to synchronous machines
when operating in motor mode.

The input of the moment of inertia is now available in units of kgm2 ;

A built-in AVR can be used to start the motor;
A built-in MDM is available. (#20156)

Shunt/Filter (ElmShnt):

When configured as an RL or C shunt type using technology 3PH-YN, definition of the

zero sequence impedance/admittance is now supported. The zero sequence impedance
and admittance can be defined using the R0/R1 and X0/X1 parameters and G0/G1 and
B0/B1 parameters, respectively.
Grounded shunts now offer the configuration of the star point as either Per step or Con-
stant. The first option corresponds to the implementation in previous PowerFactory ver-
sions. See the Shunt/Filter technical reference for further information. More details are
available in the Whats New document. (#5577)

Low-voltage load (ElmLodlv ): It is now possible to define unbalanced three-phase low-voltage

loads. Voltage dependency of low-voltage loads can be specified and support for composite
(ZIP)- and exponent models is provided. More details are available in the Whats New document.
(#20281)

PWM converter, full-bridge Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) model (ElmVsc): The full-
bridge MMC is now supported in all calculation types. More details are available in the Whats
New document. (#18623)

DIgSILENT PowerFactory 2018 Release, Release Notes 2

1 PowerFactory 2018

PWM converter, MMC model (ElmVsc/ElmVscmono): A new, more detailed MMC model (Ag-
gregate Arm Model) has been implemented for EMT simulations. The model includes an equiv-
alent capacitor per arm and allows the analysis of issues related to energy balancing between
arms and legs, such as second harmonic circulating currents. More details are available in the
Whats New document. (#18624)

Series reactor (ElmSind): The definition of the zero sequence impedance (for three-phase re-
actors) through the R0/R1 and X0/X1 parameters is now supported. More details are available
in the Whats New document. (#18798)

Multicore cable (TypCabmult): The calculation of the series impedance for the new multicore
cable model considers proximity effects. More details are available in the Whats New document.
(#19596)

Line couplings element and tower type (TypTow, ElmTow): The definition of 2-phase lines is
now available, with support for load flow and short-circuit calculations. (#20657)

Switches which are normally open can now be highlighted by a coloured circle. (#21105)

Modal analysis now offers the drawing of eigenvector arrows. (#18741)

Pre-configuration of new diagrams is now possible. (#16298)

PowerFactory can now be run in in-memory mode when using a local database. In this mode,
no changes are written to the database. More details are available in the Whats New document.
(#20484)

A new layer, Open Standby Switches, is now available. (#19499)

1.2.4 Handling and User Interface

A new Help button in some error dialogs now provides additional and customisable information
regarding errors. More details are available in the Whats New document. (#20279)

1.2.5 Stability Analysis Functions (RMS)

Two new options, Reference system calculation method and Reference, have been introduced
for the dynamic simulation. More details are available in the Whats New document. (#18679;
#15221)

1.2.6 Small Signal Stability (Eigenvalue Analysis)

The Eigenvalue/Modal Analysis has the following enhancements:

The Calculation of initial conditions is now automated has been removed from the Eigen-
value/Modal Analysis toolbar;
When the Calculation of initial conditions command is opened from the Modal Analysis

1.3.23 Small Signal Stability (Eigenvalue Analysis)

Description ID

3 Modal Analysis now supports writing of results to MATLAB files, even if #20190
no eigenvalues were found.

3 Eigenvalue/Modal-Analysis results now feature a complete list of state #21612

variables.

- Presentation of Eigenvalue-/Modal Analysis results in browsers has been #18676

enhanced. In particular, the comparison of state-results of different eigen-
values is now possible. More details are available in the Whats New doc-
ument.

- New option introduced for Modal Analysis to report DSL models using #15207
buffers or external functions. DIG18625

- Enhanced result file user-interface to post-process Modal/Eigenvalue- #15790

Analysis results when:
Setting the calculation results of a calculated mode in the models;

Showing the mode/state results in a results browser; and

Plotting the mode/state results.

- Enhanced determinism for eigenvector results of Modal Analysis: #18518

A deterministic normalisation incorporating the magnitude and an-
gle of an eigenvector is now provided. In particular, eigenvector
results no longer differ by a complex rotation between consecutive
PowerFactory versions.

Very small and very large eigenvalues can now be optionally omitted
when using the QR/QZ-method of the Modal/Eigenvalue Analysis.

1.3.24 Installation, License and Setup

Description ID

3 The PowerFactory process terminates now with a documented error #14735

code. DIG20052
DIG24446

3 Invalid command line arguments are now reported on application startup. #12462

1 PowerFactory 2018

Description ID

3 Improved handling of incorrect license serial number. #21725

3 Offline mode: Improved progress bar during synchronisation actions. #18233

3 Creation of desktop shortcut can now be disabled in silent installation. #20615

- Silent installation of PowerFactory has been improved and extended. #21307

More information can be found in section PowerFactory Silent Installa-
tion Options in the Advanced Installation and Configuration Manual.

- Various LicenseManager issues have been resolved. #18824

DIG26708

- The IntGroup dialog now supports license assignment for groups of users. #18450

3 LicenseManager now always starts in server mode when installed with #19611
LicenseComponents.

- Example videos are now available online and are therefore no longer in- #19767
cluded in the PowerFactory installation. The video files may be obtained
as a separate setup package if required.

3 The Upgrade Assistant now warns regarding workspaces which already #18743
contain data.

3 Application update check: Ignored versions are now only considered in #20283
the automatically-executed check at startup. Manual checks always report
a new version (if there is one), independent of these ignore settings.

- Wibu CodeMeter runtime has been updated to version 6.50. #20374

3 Following installation on a client machine without local license, the Li- #20923
censeManager is no longer shown.

- The Administrator user can now check which system account is logged #21140
on as a PowerFactory user. The information is available in the IntUser DIG30731
object.
