Introduction

Mechanical component and maintenance. In general, Maintenance means to hold, keep, sustain
or preserve. Maintenance is an activity involved in keeping something in good working order,
and actions performed to keep systems functioning or in service.

Principle Of Maintenance. To achieve product quality and customer satisfaction through

adjusted and serviced equipment. Maximize useful life of equipment. Keep equipment safe and
prevent safety hazards. Minimize frequency and severity of interruptions

Objectives . Must be consistent with the goals of production (cost, quality, delivery, safety) .
Must be comprehensive and include specific responsibilities

Continuous improvement Reduced inventory Improved capacity Faster and more dependable
troughput Higher productivity ADVANTAGES OF IMPLEMENT MAINTENANCE Lower
operating cost Improved quality

Reduced inventory -Reducing stores and buffer stock. . Continuous improvement -Is on going
effort to improve product services or process. . Higher productivity -Is high ratio of output to
input of production.

Improved capacity -Improve the capacity of product. . Improved quality -Achieve a step change
in quality through contracting out the service with the new service level agreement. . Lower

Routine maintenance -It is a daily maintenance ( cleaning, inspection, oiling and re-tightening ), .
Preventive maintenance -It design to retain the healthy condition of equipment and prevent
failure . Predictive maintenance -It is a method in which the service life of important part is
predicted based on inspection or diagnosis, in order to use the parts to the limit of their service
life.

Objective

1. Able to identify the component and the part to be replaced.

2. Able to do maintenance procedure on a mechanical equipment.
3. Able to bring the broken component to its functional state (depends on the damage).
4. Able to finish and secure all the equipment before testing.
5. Able to finish the assigned work on time.

2
Tools and equipment

1. Philip screwdriver

2. Pliers

3. Wire tape

4. Grease

5. Carbon brush

6. Wire

7. Multimeter

8. cutter

9. solder kit

10. fuse

3
Safety procedure

1. Plug the socket off from the power supply.

2. Wear gloves when testing the machine.
3. Clean all the excessive grease after maintenance.
4. Always check for short circuit in wire connection.

Procedure

1. The grinder is first tested with the power supply to identify the problem
2. The gearbox is opened and cleaned properly from old grease using screw driver and
degreaser
3. The right amount of new grease is inserted covering all the gears and bearings.
4. The gearbox is installed and tightened properly with the motor
5. The carbon brush is opened and replaced with the new carbon and connected back to the
terminals
6. The old worn out wire is cut using cutter
7. New wire is soldered and covered securely with wire tape.
8. The new plug is installed with new fuse
9. The machine plugged to the power supply and tested for function.

Discussion

Some mechanical components are incapable of being fixed or maintain due to shortage of spare
parts and the damage is too severe that will cause it to breakdown again another time. For
damage part that are replaceable will be replace with new one ore the whole set that related to the
part that are damage.

Severe damaged component are better to be replaced with new component because the cause of
maintenance and part are higher than buying a new one.

A component that are damaged and the cause is identified need to be thoroughly check from
mechanical to electrical that related to the functioning of the machine.

Conclusion

By the end of the case study we have learn a lot about the importance of mechanical component
and their maintenance to keep them working properly and return to its functional state.

We have achieved our objective that is to identify each component from the grinder that we had
worked on and also the defect of the machine.

Other than that we also done the maintenance procedure such as cleaning and greasing the
component and also replaced a few worn out part that making it not functioning well.

Lastly we able to test it and finish the work on time and the skill will be used in future while
dealing with mechanical components
