VPWS (Virtual Private Wire Service)

VPWS (Virtual Private Wire Service) is one of the Layer 2 VPN Services of the Alcatel-Lucent Service
Routers. The other Layer 2 VPN Service is VPLS that will be explained in the following articles. Here, we will
focus on VPWS .

Logical View of VPWS

VPWS (Virtual Private Wire Service) is also called Virtual Leased Line. It provides point-to-point
connection service and from the point of Customer it is like leased lines. With VPWS two sites of customer are
like directly connectes as point-to-point.

VPWS service encapsulates the customer data and transports over the service providers IP or MPLS network in
a GRE or MPLS tunnel.

Above we said that VPWS is a Layer 2 VPN Service. But sometimes VPWS can be defined Layer 1 VPN
Service, because there is no MAC learning in this service.

VPWS service offers service for interworking for Ethernet, ATM, Frame-Relay and TDM across a common
IP/MPLS network. These services and the names that represents them are mentioned below:

Epipe : Point-to-point Ethernet service between two Ethernet node,

Apipe : Point-to-point ATM service between two ATM node,
Fpipe : Point-to-point Frame-Relay service between two Frame-Relay node,
Cpipe : Point-to-point TDMservice between two TDM node.
Ipipe : Point-to-point service between two node that has different technolgies.

This is not all the thing about VPWS certainly;) In the next articles, we will talk about these Epipe, Apipe,
Fpipe, Cpipe and Ipipe. Especially, Ethernet technologhy, Epipe will be deeply explained. Keep on
