Introduction - Okay guys so we are going to do some movement stuff (gonoodle or just some movements)
(attention grabber)
Body Learning Activity Title -
(Activity #1) - Teacher Actions
o So we are going to read a book by our good friend Robert Munsch and the illustrator Micheal
Martchenko. I think I had a teacher called Martchenko. I cant remember which school.
o So the book that we are going to read is So Much Snow. So in all the books there is always a
problem that the main character faces right? The three little pigs it was the big bad wolf right?
What do you think the problem that the main character is going to face in this story? Based on
the title of the book?
o Okay so I need you to pay attention to the sequence of the story okay. The problems that
continue occurring as well okay? Throughout the reading of the book keep an eye on the
students. Keep them interested if possible.
o (first page) so do you guys know what a snow day is? A day where there is no school because
there is too much snow on the ground. Brooks doesnt get very many does it? Why does
Jasmine want to go to school?
o (page 7) so the snow is falling and it is up to her knees right? Thats not so bad. But its still
falling isnt it? How high do you think it is going to get next?
o (page 9) Uh oh now how high is the snow? Up to her bum. Shes not too worried though is
she? Not really. How high do you think it will be next?
o (page 11) Oh! Now its up to her nose! This isnt a good thing is it? Do you think she is getting
cold at this point? Is she still enjoying the snow? Not really huh? Do you think the snow is
going to get any higher?
o (page 13) Now its above her head! And she cant move! What do you think is going to happen
to Jasmine? What happens when you stay outside for too long?
o (page 15) Shes frozen! The caretaker found her frozen! Now Jasmine has another problem
doesnt she? What is that problem? Shes frozen!
o (page 17) So they are going to try and unfreeze her (thaw her out). What ways do you think
they could do that? What ways could they use to try and unfreeze her?
o (page 19) What are they trying at this point? Lots of blankets right? Is that working? Not at all.
What other ways can they try to thaw her out?
o (page 21) What did they try now? Hot chocolate. Yum who here likes hot chocolate? Does it
work though? Nope it doesnt work either. What else do you think they will try?
o (page 23) What did they try at this point? Making her laugh! Did that work? Yes it did!
Laughter is defiantly the best remedy! Even frozen bodies. So that is how that problem is
solved.
o (page 27) So why did Jasmine want to come to school today? Its Pizza day! But its a snow day.
Do you think that Jasmine will get her pizza?
o (page 29) Looks like they all did! Even with snow on the ground, nothing can stop a pizza day
right?
o So what did you think of that story huh? Its pretty silly huh? I mean unless youre from
Alberta. We get snow like that a lot (at least in Red Deer we do!) So what was your favorite
part? Make sure the students think of different answers. Why did you like that part of the
story?
o Okay guys so remind me how the story went, Jasmine wanted to go to school. Why?
o There is a lot of snow on the ground. How high was it to begin? Her knees. And then? Her
bum. After her bum? Her nose. How high was it the last time? Above her head.
o What happened to her when the snow got above her head? She got frozen! What ways did
they try to unfreeze her? Wrapping her in blankets, giving her hot chocolate then tickling her
chin. Did the last one work? Yes it did!
o Did Jasmine get her Pizza day in the end? She did didnt she.
- Student Actions
o Listen to the story so they can answer the questions
o Answer the questions as they come up. May not be the best idea but I will call on someone if
they are not paying attention.
o Make hypothesis on what is going to happen next.
o Think about the important characters in the story
o Think about the sequence of events
- Assessment Evidence
o Observation
o Answers to the questions. Thoughtful and showing that they are listening.
- Transition Details
o Okay so I need you guys to head back to your seats and I am going to hand out a worksheet to
you.
o The first thing on your paper is your name etc.
Learning Activity Title
- Teacher Actions
o Okay guys, your worksheets has two boxes on each right?
o So what you guys need to do it fill the boxes, but I am going to make sure you guys understand
what you need to put in the boxes.
o So the first one says Who can read what this first box says? Ask someone to read it.
Important character right. You will notice that there are two boxes the say important character.
So there are two characters in the book that are important.
o So we know the first important character right? Jasmine because she is the main character in
the book. Who do you think the other important character is in the book? Why? The answer I
am looking for is the caretaker because he unfroze her.
o Okay who can read the box at the bottom? Show them which box I mean. It says problems
right. So what are the problems that Jasmine faces in the story?
o The last one is solutions. How are the problems solved in the story?
o Make sure you guys draw out your pictures. Just to be clear your pictures have to fill the entire
box. I dont want to see any picture like this. Show them an example of a very little drawing.
Body o Once you are done filling out your paper and drawing your pictures you may read a book
(Activity #2) quietly!
- Student Actions
o Listen to the instructions
o Read the titles of the boxes. I will be asking certain students because I know that they will be
able to.
o Draw the pictures so that they fill the box. No tiny drawings.
o Read a book quietly when they are finished.
- Assessment Evidence
o Observation. Make sure to keep an eye on all the students, not just the ones I am focusing on.
o Worksheets completed
o Reading quietly on the carpet if finished early.
- Transition Details
o I need all the worksheets in your blue folders in your mailboxes.
o I will dismiss you a table at a time. The ones sitting the nicest and giving me five will get to go
first.

Closure Once you are done putting your paper away, you need to get your jacket sandwiches.
(consolidation of
