Assignment: Journal Writing Assignment #2 Reference: Counsels to Parents, Teachers and Students Students and Teaching (p. 64-70) Summary: Education is more than the study of books and an accumulation of knowledge. It is more than scoring good grades on written tests to pass classes and obtain a degree. True educa- tion involves the development of a persons whole being. The mental, physical and spiritual components must be symmetrical and each given appropriate training and exercise. Secondarily, local churches should set up funds to help capable students who show an interest in missionary work finance their education. However, schools should be cautious not to enter into debt in an attempt to help students out by lowering tuition. This is an important bal- ancing act churches and schools should engage in together under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Major Claim: True education is the symmetrical development of the whole personmind, body and soul. To achieve this goal, educators, as well as students, must all be pupils in the school of Christ and learn from the Master. Rationale: It is only by combining study of the physical world with the study of Gods word, the Bible, that man can rise to the height which God intends for him. God will gladly accept and bless parents, teachers, and students who devote themselves to His cause as workers with Him. Evaluation, Response: It always amazes me how sound Ellen Whites counsel is and how easi- ly it may be implemented into our lives if we are willing to put self aside. This is doubly im- portant for teachers as they have the responsibility of molding young people for life in this world and eternity to come. Care must be taken by teachers not only to demonstrate reverence for God during worship services, but also during daily interaction with those they have charge over. Stu- dents must see Christ reflected daily in their teacher so the appropriate pattern may be set. Teachers must seek Christ daily or they will fail to achieve this necessary pattern. Reading this article reinforced in my mind the importance of integrating all subject matter taught in our schools with the wisdom found in Gods word. Proverbs 2:6 reveals: For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. Only from Gods word will we obtain true wisdom and heavenly truth. Jesus Himself reinforced this while in prayer to the Father: Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth (John 17:17). Because my wife, Sally, is the Student Finance Advisor for the college, I see the constant strug- gle between the necessity of maintaining a sound financial footing for the college and the need to help students with the financial burden of educating themselves. Again, the counsel given by Mrs. White must be followed if our institution is going to maintain a secure financial footing. Application: As I learn more about true education and the qualifications of a teacher, I realize my deep need of Christ. Without him I will be totally unqualified to instruct young minds.
