Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Exporting goods is one of the countrys best economic resource.

According to statistics, Banana is the fourth largest produced fruit crop of the

world and the Philippines is the second largest producer of Banana next to

Ecuador. In 2012, more than 80% of the Cavendish bananas were produced on

the island of Mindanao, with Davao, Northern Mindanao and Soccskargen as the

top regions and Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley and Bukidnon as the top

three provinces.

The Cavendish Bananas undergoes different processes from seedlings

to harvesting to the selecting of the approved batch for export. Under the

process of the selection of what batch is accepted for export, manual

scrutinization of the products is done. This process takes a lot of time because of

the number of products to be manually checked.

Technological advancement are now vastly applied in the field of

commerce and agriculture. In relation to this, the fusion between technology and

agriculture leads to big leaps in commerce.

Because of this, the proponents of this study would like to incorporate

image processing analysis to the selection/profiling of the Banana Cavendish

products for export. Through this, we believe that like any other technological

advancement, this will ease and redefine the process of exporting.

Objectives of the Study

The overall objective of this study is to design a device that utilizes

Image Processing in Banana Quality Profiling for Export with the following

specific features:

1. Design a device that is efficient for Quality Profiling of Bananas

2. Display if the profiled bananas are qualified for export or not

3. Conduct a functionality test and see if it is effective and accurate

4. Come up with a profitable and affordable means of profiling

Bananas

Scope and Delimitation

The study entitled, Image Processing Utilization in Banana Quality

Profiling in Cavendish Subgroup for Export is focused in the application of

Image Processing Analysis. It will be utilized as a means of profiling what

batch of Bananas are qualified for export. It will display whether the subject

under examination is exportable or not.

However, this study will not cover the pricing and other processes

involved in processing the Banana Products for export.

Significance of the Study

This section provides brief description on the various significance of

the study. The benefits and beneficiaries are stated below.

Farmers. The development of this device will be a big assistance to

the farmers who are producers of Bananas. This will lessen the expense

for manual labor and save time usually needed on the typical profiling for

export. This device will also lessen the worries of being cheated or tricked

by the buyers of their product.

Business Sectors. Technological advancement will be a great

assistant to commercial sectors to provide good service and guaranteed

products that will not give our products a bad reputation in the

international market.

Computer Engineers. Engineers are the pioneers of new

developments of technologies. This study, if it will be a success, would

become a great reference for future computer engineers on how to deal

with the fusion of agriculture and technology. This study will be the basis

of new technologies that will surely redefine the typical way of life.
