Patient Evaluation, Diagnosis

and Treatment planning

D-Evaluation of existing restoration:
1-Structural integrity.
2-Marginal opening.
3-Restoration-related periodontal health.
a-surface roughness.
b-interproximal overhang.
c-impingement on the zone of attachment.
4-Occlusal and interproximal contacts.
5-Caries.
6-Esthetics.
E- evaluation of occlusion and occlusal wear:
1- Occlusal interferences.
2-The number and position of occlusal contacts.
3-The amount and pattern of attrition of teeth and
restoration resulting
from occlusal function.
4- The interarch space available for placement of needed
restoration.
F-Assessment of tooth integrity and fracture
Cracked tooth syndrome.
Diagnostic tests:
1-Transillumination.
2- Biting test.
G- Esthetic evaluation.
discoloration
- extrinsic e.g. external stain(food,
drinks, smoking)
- intrinsic e.g. dental fluorosis

Accidental
traumatic fracture of teeth.
2-Evaluation of the periodontium:
a- To determined the effect that the periodontal health of the teeth
will have on the restorative dentistry treatment plan.
b- To determine the effect that planned and existing restorations
will have on the health of the periodontium.
3-Evaluation of the radiograph.

Clinical situations for which radiograph may be indicated

includes:
-Pervious periodontal or root canal therapy.
-History of pain or trauma.
-Large or deep restorations.
-Deep carious cavity.
-Swelling and mobility of teeth, fistula or sinus tract infection.
-Abutment teeth for fixed or removable partial prosthesis.
-Unusual tooth morphology or color.
-Missing teeth with unknown reason.
.

4-Evaluaton of diagnostic casts.

cases involving multiple missing teeth need

the evaluation of casts mounted on a semi-
adjustable articulator. This enable dentist to
assess the occlusal relationship & to plan
restorative treatment.
Treatment
The ultimate goal of operative dentistry treatment should
be restoration of health. This will include
Restoring and maintaining form, function, phonetics
and esthetics
Occlusal re establishment and stability

Not only to the teeth themselves, but also to their

surrounding supporting tissues and to the
welfare of the whole patient.
Treatment Plan :
Planning the restoration of individual tooth requires the
consideration of the
Following:
1- amount and form of remaining tooth structure.
2-The functional need of each tooth.
3-esthetic need.
4-the final objective of the overall treatment plan.

Treatment Sequence:
1-Severity of the disease.
2-Esthetic needs.
3-Effective use of time.
