Workshop on Assessment of In-situ Compressive

Strength in Concrete Structures 1st Run

Introduction
Programme Details
The failures in concrete structures are often related to ----------------------------------------------------------------

destructive testing methods (rebound number, UPV
and pull-out test) with acceptable correlation curves.

Objective
The Workshop covers the approaches for confirmation of in-situ strength, assessment of existing structures to be
modified, redesigned or damaged and dispute over concrete quality, non-conformity or defective workmanship in
new concrete construction.

The participants will be guided through the topics which include the use of cores, calibration of indirect method
(NDT), use of calibrated indirect method and determination if structure has adequate strength using cores or
indirect test data with limited number of cores. The complementary standard provides additional guidance to
those in EN 13791. A sample test plan consisting of 3 stages is given in Annex B (informative) of SS 592. In
addition, the limitations and usefulness of various NDT methods including Windsor (not in EN 13791) are
reviewed based on tests conducted in laboratory studies.
Speaker Profile
Dr Tam Chat Tim graduated in BE (Civil), ME (Structures) and PhD (Materials Science) and after 3 years of in
design then joined Department of Civil Engineering of University of Malaya (1963-1979) and since 1979, the
Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering of National University of Singapore where currently his
appointment is Adjunct Associate Professor since retiring in 1996. He has over 50 years of experience in teaching,
research and providing technical advice to the construction industry as well as involvement in the development
of standards and accreditation both in Malaysia and Singapore.
