Winter, 2018
Headlines
As we put together this newsletter, we are nearing the holiday season and
the weather is beautiful. I hope it stays this way!

We have great things planned for 2018.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete our annual PLC
survey in November. We value your feedback and opinions and have
considered them in making our new schedule of programs. If you have
any other suggestions, please let us know! We are always open to ideas!

We try to offer a variety of programs for families including registered, drop in, daytime, weekend,
and evening. There are also both city and rural programs. We feel there is a good balance when
considering everything. Let us know what you think!

Our MEND program is moving to Killam. If you are in the Killam area and would like to attend this
active and fun filled 10 week course, please call our Centre for more information.

We have been offered the opportunity to participate in the Welcome to Parenthood program again.
This supportive program is available to new moms and dads. Please contact Kim for more details.

We hope that 2018 is your best year ever!!

Triple P - Positive Parenting Program

KIDS USING TECHNOLOGY

THE SCREEN TIME DILEMMA

Sometimes it seems like kids spend all their time in front of the
TV or on a smartphone or on the computer. You might even feel
like banning technology from your house. Thats your choice. But
for most parents, the reality is we need to adapt. We need to
help our kids lead a balanced life.

Children can benefit from age-appropriate technology. Watching TV or playing on the computer can
be fun, entertaining and a good way to relax. And there are many programs, games and apps that
are educational and can help your childs learning.
But if children spend too much time in front of a screen they will miss out on other important
activities. Things like playing outdoors, talking to friends and reading are vital for kids.

So how can you strike the right balance in your house?

Start by learning about what technology is around. You can do your own research and talk to your
children and other parents. Think about what is good about each device. And think about what you
will need to limit or manage, based on your childs age.

Its also a good idea to put some rules in place. Let your kids know what they are allowed to use
and when they can use it. Discuss this as a family so that your kids can have a say too.

For more information on this and other

parenting topics, please talk to a FRC
staff or visit the Triple P website:

Resources for Families - Ages and Stages Questionnaires and
Social Emotional Questionnaires
Are you curious about your child's development?
The first six years of a child's life are extremely important to their development and
while each child develops at their own unique pace, we can sometimes find
ourselves wondering, is my child's development on track?
We offer the Ages and Stages Questionnaire for parents to use to give themselves a
snapshot of their childs development. The engaging questionnaires are interactive
and promote positive, developmentally appropriate play.

What Is the Ages and Stages Questionnaire?

A simple and fun questionnaire designed with specific questions based on a child's development in
the following areas:
Fine Motor Problem Solving Communication Personal-Social Gross Motor

What Is the Ages and Stages Questionnaire-SE?

The Ages and Stages SE asks specific questions based on the child's social/emotional development
in the following areas:
Self Regulation Compliance Communication Adaptive Functioning
Autonomy Affective interaction with people

Why should I do a questionnaire?

Learn what to expect from your child at different
developmental stages
Learn fun and new activities to engage in with your child
Learn when and where to receive support to ensure your
child meets their developmental milestones

When can I start using the questionnaire with my child?

The questionnaires range from 2 months to 5 years of age.
It is recommended that a questionnaire be completed one or two times a year; unless there is a
particular area of concern that you want to track. Activity Sheets are also available to support
healthy development and growth in specific areas of development throughout the year.
Where can I get and complete a questionnaire?
Please ask a staff member to help you, they will determine the correct
questionnaire to use as well as answer any questions you may have.
You can complete the questionnaire in the comfort of your own home;
or use our Indoor Playground/Discovery Room and resources. Our toy
lending library is also available to take home different toys geared
towards the different developmental stages.

Share the gift of communication!

Did you know in 2014 The Camrose and Area ECD Coalition received statistical
information that 35% percent of kindergarten children in our area were experiencing
difficulty in Communication & General Knowledge, which includes the ability to
communicate wants and needs and to be imaginative!

Use these Conversation Starters to help your little ones with communication
-If you could plan the greatest day ever, what would it look like?
-If you could have any animal in the world as a pet what would it be?
-What is the funniest thing that happened to you this week?
-What is one thing you wish you knew how to do?
- What is the best thing about being _____ years old?
-Where is your favorite place to be?
-If you could have one super hero power what would it be?
-How many hugs do you need every day?
-What makes you feel better when you are sad or upset
- Tell me about something that makes you happy?
- What are the 3 best things about you?
