"Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.” ~Albert Einstein

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year. I will lead a respectful and disciplined classroom. To achieve this I have
established a few simple policies and students are responsible to comply with these policies. If you decide not to
comply, there will be logical consequences. By enforcing these policies, I promise to you fairness and order in our
classroom.

A. Classroom Expectations and Rules

Respect for Self

• I will always do my best. Respect for Others
• I will positively participate in • I will stay on task without Respect for School
all classroom activities. disturbing /distracting others. • I will raise my hand to speak.
• I will complete all • I will not use “put downs” or • I will enter and exit the room
assignments on time. harass others. quietly.
• I will respect other people’s • I will actively listen when the
differences and opinions. teacher is speaking.

If you choose to break a rule, punishments will always fit the crime. Of course, there are behaviors that will warrant a
Principal’s referral immediately. Examples of this include gross insubordination or violent behavior. Behaviors that are
less severe, but in violation of the basic expectations and rules of the class will be dealt with in the manner described
below. This format is in no way all inclusive and is subject to change:

1st Incident: Verbal warning. Student is asked to discontinue the inappropriate behavior/action.
2nd Incident: Student receives a 1 hour after school detention.
3rd Incident: Student receives a 3 hour Saturday detention.

C. Detentions
Detentions will be served after school based on teacher availability. Saturday detention will be served on the next
available Saturday from 8:30am to 11:30am. One day notice will always be given to parents.

D. Tardies and Late Arrivals

A student who is not in their seat when the bell sound ends, is considered either tardy or late. A student is tardy if they
arrive without a pass after the bell. A student is late if he arrives with a pass after the bell. Tardy and late students
need to sign the tardy/late log folder next to the door and are not to disrupt the class. Late students need to place their
pass inside the tardy/late folder, also. There is no penalty for arriving late with a pass. A student is tardy if he is not in
their seat when the bell stops ringing and does not have a pass. The tardy penalties per semester are explained
below:

• First Tardy: Student receives a warning.

• Second Tardy: Student receives a warning.
• Third Tardy: Student receives 1/2 hour after school detention.
• Fourth Tardy: Student receives 1/2 hour after school detention.
• Fifth Tardy: Student receives 1 hour after school detention.
• Additional Tardies: Student receives a 3 hour Saturday detention.

E. Academic Honesty
It is expected that students will use genuine, sincere, and fair means for the accomplishment of the tests, tasks, or
projects from which evaluations of progress shall be determined. Students found copying or cheating in any way will
receive automatic zeros and have phone calls made to their parents. In addition, a write-up of the incident will be given
to the Principal. Maximum penalty for cheating is suspension from school.
F. Attendance
If a student has an excused absence from class, the student is responsible for the homework assignment, handouts
and notes that are missed. Students must exchange phone numbers with at least two fellow students to inquire about
a missed class session. The student has as many days as he or she was absent to make up the assignments. It is up
to the student to inquire about missed work and tests. Zeros will be given if a student fails to make up work within an
acceptable time frame. Unexcused absences void all make-up privileges.

G. Homework and Late Work

Homework is integral in the study of mathematics and will be assigned daily and may not be turned in late.
Assignments not completed due to lack of understanding require a parent signature and comment reflecting the
student’s attempt.

H. Tests and Quizzes

If a student has an excused absence for a test day, they may make up the test or quiz in the morning or afternoon of
the next available day. Arranging a make-up requires signing in with the instructor. A missed make-up appointment
without notice will result in a zero.

I. Grading System
The East Whittier City School District has implemented a two-grade system for all middle schools. As a result, an
Academic and Scholarship grade will be assigned. The grading for each semester will be based on the following:

Academic Scholarship
• Common Assessments 65% • Homework 85%
• Benchmarks 20% • Binder Checks 10%
• Quizes 15% • Work Habits/Effort 5%

J. Grading Scale
• 99.0%-100%= A+ • 88.0%-89.9%= B+ • 78.0%-79.9%= C+ • 68.0%-69.9%= D+ • 00.0%-59.9%= F
• 92.0%-98.9%= A • 82.0%-87.9%= B • 72.0%-77.9%= C • 62.0%-67.9%= D
• 90.0%-91.9%= A- • 80.0%-81.9%= B- • 70.0%-71.9%= C- • 60.0%-61.9%= D-

K. Supply List
• 1- 1 ½ inch three-ring hardcover binder for Math Only
• 1- Two-pocket folder
• Lined notebook paper 8 1/2 x 11
• Dividers 5 pack
• 2 Sharpened pencils with erasers
• 2 Blue or Black ink pens
Parents, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns via e-mail or phone.

Please review and discuss these policies and return by Wednesday, September 8 signed.

I have fully read and familiarized myself with Mr. Lemus’ math course information. At the same time, I have discussed
