CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

I.I The Background of The Study

Being successful in teaching English is the dominant factor that the Englishte

acher should pay attention to, especially in teaching reading. Through reading, one can enhance

his experience, develop new concept, solve his problem, and broaden his h o r i z o n o f

t h i n k i n g , w h i c h a r e n e e d e d t o e n s u r e c o n t i n u i n g p e r s o n a l g r o w t h a n d adopt

the change in the world yet the importance of reading has not been realized by most of our

society a large number of our population is classified as poor readers and the majority of the

people are content to read materials of poor quality.

In reading comprehension, the message to be imposed in the written form is the

most important element that the students must recognize, because the

primary purpose of reading is to know the thoughts expressed in the printed material.Therefore,

reading wit comprehension is only a way for the students to arrive at what they want to know

from the reading material. However, the problem is how to make them comprehend or students

from Elementary to University level, reading is something that has to be done. They have to

read their compulsory books or other materials related to their lesson. For students

who are studying languages, reading is one of the skills, which has to be learned

and is considered as the most important one because it can

influence other language skill (listening, speaking, and writing). Accordin

Kustaryo (1988;2)it is certainly not easy to present the English re

a d i n g f o r I n d o n e s i a n s t u d e n t s w h o s e l a n g u a g e s ys t e m i s d i f f e r e n t . R e a d i

n g i s a c o m p l e x process which involves not only the read the text but also their experience t

ocomprehend it. Because of its complexity, many teachers of English at junior

ands e n i o r h i g h s c h o o l f i n d d i f f i c u l t i e s i n a l l t e a c h i n g r e a d i n g a n d p r e f e r t

e a c h i n g structure to reading. Based on all reason above, the writer thinks that humor stories

can motivate students to read, because humor stories are interested in conducting

research entitle “Improving the student’s Reading Comprehension by Using

Humor Stories0 of The Second Year Students of SMA Negeri 1 Darul Imarah”

In reading, English. Teacher should introduce the humor stories a s a n a l t e r n a t i v e w a y

t o g i v e v a r i a t i o n t o t h e s t u d e n t s i n t e a c h i n g a n d l e a r n i n g process. Based on the

junior high school curriculum, reading is one of the four skills in studying English. Reading

consists of narrative, descriptive, procedure, news item, recount, and anecdote. The aim

of the students learn reading, they have to know basic competence and achievement

indicators in reading. Basic competence of

reading45nderstand transactional discourse, interpersonal discourse, and oral monol

ogueespecially in the forms of descriptive, narrative, anecdote, analytical exposition,

andh o r t a t o r y e x p o s i t i o n u s i n g o r a l l a n g u a g e v a r i a t i o n .

A n d a c h i e v e m e n t i n d i c a t o r s s t udents can read continuous story, students can identify

rhetorical moves of a text in

the narrative, descriptive, and anecdote form, students can identify main

i d e a s , 1upporting ideas, and detailed information of the text, and students

can identify and use the tense


I.2 The Problem of The Study

According to the statement above, the research question is formulated as follow

does the use of humour stories improve the reading comprehension of the second year

students of SMA Negeri 1 Darul Imarah ?

I..3 The Aim of The Study

The aim of the research is to find out whether the use of humour stories inteaching

reading can improve student’s reading comprehension to the second grade students of

SMA Negeri 1 Darul Imarah.

1.4 The Basic Assumption and Hypothesis

1.4.1 The Basic Assumption

Basic assumption is very important in a research because it is a base of theory in the report of a

research. In a research, a researcher must be able to give postulate that relates to research

problems. Arikunto (2010:186) says a basic assumption is an opinion that is believed by a

researcher. Next, she says every researcher can formulate different basic assumption. In addition,

she suggests that researchers must read information sources a lot to help them to formulate basic

assumption.

Next, the basic assumption of this research are:


1. Reading is very important to Elementary until University level the students must mastered.

2. The students’ reading is still needed to be improved.

3. The success of teaching and learning process is influenced by method or strategy used by

teachers.

4. Humor stories is one of strategies that can be used in improve reading.

1.4.2 The Hypothesis of the Research

According to Arikunto (2010:198), hypothesis is a guiding idea, tentative explanation of

statement of possibilities, serving to imitate an adequate observation and search the relevant data,

and other consideration and predict the certain result.

Next, based on the problems of the study thus the hypothesis of this study is: The second year

students of SMA Negeri 1 Darul Imarah who are taught to improve reading skill by using humor

stories strategy get higher score than those are taught by using conventional strategy.

I.5 Significance of The Study

The result of the research is expected to be useful reference for the Englishlanguage teaching

particularly for teaching reading students/ for the English teacher for other and for the writer

himself.
I.6 Scope of The Study

This research is restricted to the use of Humor Stories as reading

materialsf r o m t e x t b o o k i n E n g l i s h c l a s s . B y d i s c i p l i n e , t h i s r e s e a r c

h i s u n d e r a p p l i e d linguistics. By content, this study is limited to discussion to

the use 30 essay tests question method to improve the students’ reading comprehension and

by activity this r e s e a r c h a d m i n i s t e r e d p r e t e s t t o f i n d o u t t h e p r i o r k n o w l e d g e

o f t h e s t u d e n t s f o r example+ reading material test that consist of humor stories.

The topic are wrong thought, special gift, watch the door and going to the zoo, and posttest

that would be done after a number of treatment to discover, the reading ability subjects in

applying this case, the writer used humor stories, especially to the second year

students of SMA Negeri 1 Darul Imarah.
