6 Fascinating theories that explain the mysterious disappearance of Atlantis

Atlantis is a mythological island-continent whose first mention is attributed to the Greek philosopher
Plato.
Plato’s dialogues, Timaeus and Critias, written around 360 BC, are considered as the earliest references
to the ancient empire called Atlantis
Plato, in turn, obtained information about Atlantis from an ancient Athenian statesman called Solon
who learned of the powerful ancient empire by an ancient Egyptian priest who said that Atlantis
existed NINE thousand years before their time.
From the modern age onwards, many researchers maintained how Atlantis was real, and sooner or later
someone would find evidence of a lost city, swallowed by the ocean.
Despite the fact there is nearly no evidence at all to support the idea that it existed, many believe this
majestic ancient empire is still somewhere out there, waiting to be found.

A documentary called “Atlantis Rising” this ancient empire did exist and evidence of its existence are
massive ‘stone anchors’ located in the Strait of Gibraltar. Experts such as Richard Freund from the
University of Hartford argue that there is evidence that the powerful ancient civilization described by
Plato may have in fact existed. The anchor is said to measure 83cm across and has a hole in its center.
So what did Plato exactly say about Atlantis? To understand it we turn to Timaeus where we find the
following:
For it is related in our records how once upon a time your State stayed the course of a
mighty host, which, starting from a distant point in the Atlantic ocean, was insolently
advancing to attack the whole of Europe, and Asia to boot. For the ocean there was at
that time navigable; for in front of the mouth which you Greeks call, as you say, ‘the
pillars of Heracles,’ there lay an island which was larger than Libya and Asia
together; and it was possible for the travelers of that time to cross from it to the other
islands, and from the islands to the whole of the continent over against them which
encompasses that veritable ocean. For all that we have here, lying within the mouth of
which we speak, is evidently a haven having a narrow entrance; but that yonder is a
real ocean, and the land surrounding it may most rightly be called, in the fullest and
truest sense, a continent. Now in this island of Atlantis there existed a confederation of
kings, of great and marvelous power, which held sway over all the island, and over
many other islands also and parts of the continent.—Pl. Ti. 25c (Greek) / Plato, Timaeus

In this article, I bring you some of the strangest theories about Atlantis and its mysterious
disappearance.
Bermuda Triangle: Several authors believe that Atlantis is sunk in the Bermuda Triangle. This
according to some authors, would explain the strange phenomena that are recorded in the area.
The Nazi hypothesis: Writer and popular modern prophet Edgar Cayce claimed that the island’s
ancient inhabitants survived the catastrophe that swallowed their island/continent and migrated to
Germany to become spokesmen for Nazism. How weird is that?
We can’t mention Atlantis without a small dose of aliens, right?
There are some who argue that the ancient Atlantean actually belonged to an extraterrestrial
civilization which eventually returned to their home planet after catastrophe struck on earth. Interesting
theory, right?
One of my favorite theories. Atlantis = Antarctica. One widespread theory suggests that Atlantis was
literally transported to another place—thanks to the movements of the tectonic plates, towards what is
now known as Antarctica.
According to this hypothesis, the remains of the ancient civilization rest under kilometers of ice.
And another interesting theory suggests the mythical land is found in South America: Many historians
argue that references to Atlantis could be references to South America. Although there are several
coincidences, the continent seems too extensive to be the mythical island/continent.
One of the more recent discoveries related to Atlantis suggests the ancient empire existed near the
African Continent, not far away from the Pillars of Hercules. A German researcher claims that
Atlantis was located off the Moroccan coast and that it never actually sank.
So, what do you think? Where is Atlantis… and was it even real?
