ABSTRACT
Traffic studies are conducted to obtain accurate information about the number and movement
of vehicles within or through an area or at selected points within an area. Current and
historical volume counts provide vital information that is used in operational Evaluations,
traffic modelling and in the selection and design of road network improvements. The length of
the sampling period depends on the type of count being taken and the intended use of the data
recorded.
It provides the basis for identifying problems, confirming earlier hypothesis, quantifying the
impact of changes, and determining the nature or magnitude of needed improvements. Data
adequacy and reliability, which are absolutely essential to any traffic engineering study,
require careful, standardized collection and analysis to ensure valid interpretation and
comparability.
This data is required for design, operation, maintenance, programming and forecasting of the
traffic network of a city. Personnel involved in actual data collection require specific guidance
in collection methodology and basic data handling.
