23RD /24TH DECEMBER 2017

4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Dear Parishioners,

The Lord is near, we are at the end of the Advent season

which has been very short this year. In our first reading today
from the Book of Samuel we see King David is of a mind to
build a great house for God, but is reminded that this is not
how it should be. David’s descendent, Jesus will be born in a
humble stable.
The gospel is that of the Annunciation to Mary that she is to become the Mother of
God. Mary’s ‘yes’ is so important to ensure God’s plan of salvation. We too say ‘yes’ to
God today.
Today is a busy one, since it is the 4th Sunday of Advent and also Christmas Eve.
We have to make a quick change over from looking forward to welcoming our Saviour.
This evening we will sing Christmas carols and listen to the Christmas story once
more. The infant will be placed in the crib and we will sing words of praise like the
Angels on that first Christmas night. We will gaze in wonder and awe into that crib
which tells a story of God’s love, humility, vulnerable humanity in most humble
surroundings. We are caught up in the mystery of God’s love for us. the word,
Emmanuel , God-is-with-us, resounds in our ears; the vocie of angels bringing glad
tidings of great joy can also be heard; this night is holy and special because “the Lord has
visited his people”.
We are reminded that “the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light”.
This light is Christ our Saviour born to us. God came down from heaven, so that we can
be raised up to God’s level. This is the wonder and mystery of Christmas. Let us rejoice
once more at the birth of our Savious.
Let us remember too, that Jesus was born into a world where strife and poverty
was the norm. In many ways things haven’t change all that much. While many things
have improved, we as a humanity are still needing salvation as ever and we still need to
build a world of justice, love and peace.
I wish you a blessed Christmas and the same for the New Yer ahead.
God bless, Fr Joe
