Activities:
Warm up: Explain with examples the words and phrases they used to describe their
partners in the warm-up activity.
Elicit students to define an adjective. Note that phrases can be used as Adjectives.
Emphasize that these words help explain what something is without actually stating what
it is.
Introduction of adjectives: Introduce the following adjectives by drawing pictures on
the board: big / small, long / short, fat / thin, strong / weak, fast / slow.
Tell the class they will be performing an activity based on this idea. The teacher will give
at least two examples to begin with. If they cannot remember a word in English, this will
help their ability to communicate around that. Use the following two examples or create
your own (Item below is an object described only by Adjectives, Item 6 is a series of
Adjectives meant to identify an object).
- Object: Snowball. Adjectives: Round, Small, Frozen, White (hopefully), Soft, Hand-
Made, Tasteless, Odorless
- Object: Desk. Adjectives: Flat, Four-Legged, Wooden/Metal/Plastic (use a desk in the
room as an example), Brown, Large, Soundless or Creaky (again, use a desk in the room).
One by one Students will choose and describe one object around them in front of the class
using different ways such as: appearance, texture, shape, color, and size.
Do the "Adjectives – Draw the Opposites" worksheet Sit everyone down at their desks and
give out the worksheets. Have the students draw the opposites. As they are working,
circulate and ask questions (e.g. what is this? Is this a big, small? Etc.).
Role-play: Act out the following scenario, using adjectives to describe the situation.
“You left your bag at the gym. Describe what it looks like to the gym manager…
- I have a green bag. It is small and __________. It is as big as a _____________. It is a
leather/canvas/plastic/nylon bag.”
Assessment:
Dialogue project: Students will write dialogues in pairs about describing the things they
have lost. Must ask questions while practicing the conversation.
- Is it big/ small/ heavy/ light/ dangerous/ expensive/ cheap/ noisy/ smelly/ long/
portable/ shiny?
- What it looks like- color, size, shape etc.?
The students will receive copies of the worksheet as homework. Their assignment will be to
determine what the adjectives describe. If this is a beginner level class, the objects to choose
from could be attached to the worksheet as a word bank.
