Section C Concepts Understanding Questions (10 marks)

For each of the following statements, point out (指出) whether the description in brackets『』is correct or not.
If the description is CORRECT, write TRUE.
If the description is WRONG, write down the CORRECT DESCRIPTION.
Example:
 We must not『eat or drink in the laboratory』.
True
 Reagent bottles are used to hold『gases』.
……………………………….. (solutions)

1. Penicillin is a kind of 『invention』.

2. The symbol for the unit used in measuring temperature is『C o』.

3. mL stands for 『millitre』.

4. When finding out the volume of a liquid in a measuring cylinder, we should take the reading at the
『upper edge of the line』.

5. The backbone in vertebrates『is used to support their bodies』.

6. We usually stir the solution in a beaker with a『spatula』.

7. After touching the leaves of a Mimosa plant, they fold inwards. This shows that Mimosa『can grow』.

Section D Structural Questions (56 marks)
1. One day, Angela bought an ice lolly in the tuck-shop at recess. As the ice lolly would melt soon and
they had only 10 minutes for the recess, she had to eat it very quickly. After school, Angela wanted to
investigate whether wrapping the ice lolly with food wrap would make it melt more slowly at room
temperatures. She used two ice cubes to carry out the experiment below:

(a) Is her experiment a fair test? Why? (2 marks)

(b) Based on the answer in (a), what correction should be done to make the experiment a fair test?
(1 mark)

(c) After making the correction mentioned in (b),

(i) what is the dependent variable? (1 mark)
(ii) what instrument should be used in the experiment? (1 mark)

(d) What is the predicted result in the experiment? (1 mark)

Angela also wanted to know whether the number of food wrap will affect the melting time. Here are the
results of her experiment: for an ice cube wrapped by one, two and three layers of food wrap, the times
needed to melt the ice completely were 3, 10 and 18 minutes respectively.

(e) Fill in the missing part of the results in table below. (5 marks)

(i)___________________ Time needed for the ice to melt completely ( (ii)____________)

1 (iii)_______________
2 (iv)_______________
3 (v)_______________

(f) Draw the conclusion of the experiment. (2 marks)

4. Read the article about yellow-breast bunting below and answer the questions.

Yellow-breasted bunting ‘endangered’

Yellow-breasted bunting is listed as endangered

species by the International Union for
Conservation of Nature today. Guangdong made
the bird a key protected species in 2011. However,
in China, especially Guangdong, people believe
that this bird can detoxify their bodies and has
medicinal use. Also, the loss of their habitats due
to the constructive work could further reduce the
number of this species. Although the excessive
hunting of this animal is banned today, it only
becomes more difficult to uncover the illegal
behavior.

An extract from SCMP dated 25 November 2013

(a) In which province do the people believe this animal has the medicinal use? (1 mark)
(b) State TWO reasons why yellow-breasted bunting is nearly extinct. (4 marks)
(c) What will happen if all yellow-breasted bunting become extinct? (2 marks)
(d) Suggest TWO ways to protect this endangered species. (4 marks)
(e) (i) Give an example of endangered species in Hong Kong. (2 marks)
(ii) Suggest TWO human activities cause the decreasing number of the species mentioned in
(e) (i). (4 marks)
