800th
Anniversary
of
Kyobpa
Jikten
Sumgon
&
India
Pilgrimage
with
Dr.
Hun
Lye
October
19
to
November
8
In
the
year
1143,
a
remarkable
child
whose
birth
has
been
predicted
in
ancient
Buddhist
texts,
was
born
to
a
couple
from
the
Kyura
clan
living
in
the
eastern
Tibetan
region
of
Kham.
This
child,
initially
named
Tsunpa
Kyab,
would
eventually
be
famed
throughout
the
world
of
Himalayan
Buddhism
as
Kyobpa
Jikten
Sumgon
(1143-‐1217)
–
“Lord
Protector
of
the
Three
Worlds,”
and
as
the
founder
of
the
Drikung
Kagyu
order
of
Tibetan
Buddhism.
In
this
October,
the
Drikung
Kagyu
Order
under
the
leadership
of
His
Holiness
Drikung
Kyabgon
Tinle
Lhundup,
will
commemorate
the
800th
anniversary
of
the
great
passing
into
nirvana
of
Kyobpa
Jikten
Sumgon
with
a
weeklong
program
held
at
the
Drikung
Kagyu
Institute
in
Dehradun,
India.
While
the
particular
circumstances
of
Tibetans
living
in
exile
in
India
is
tragic,
that
this
commemoration
will
take
place
in
the
“Land
of
the
Nobles”
where
Shakyamuni
Buddha
once
walked
is
most
auspicious.
This
21-‐day
pilgrimage
to
India,
to
the
soil
where
Buddhas
walk,
will
begin
with
the
weeklong
1
program
of
the
800th
anniversary
of
Kyobpa
Jikten
Sumgon
in
Dehradun.
From
Dehradun,
we
will
move
further
northwest
to
the
foothills
of
the
Himalayas
to
the
holy
site
of
Tsopema
“Lotus
Lake”
(Rewalsar)
before
continuing
further
northwest
to
Dharamsala,
the
center
of
the
Tibetan
exile
world,
where
His
Holiness
the
Dalai
Lama
resides.
We
will
spend
the
third
week
of
this
pilgrimage
in
the
eastern
end
of
the
Gangetic
Plain,
visiting
Bodhgaya
and
Sarnath,
the
holy
sites
of
Shakyamuni
Buddha
himself
and
Varanasi
–
the
most
holy
city
of
Hindus.
As
this
is
a
pilgrimage,
all
participants
should
be
willing
and
ready
to
engage
in
the
spiritual
practices
that
the
group
will
focus
on
during
this
trip.
The
five
basic
precepts
of
the
lay-‐
ordination
are
to
be
observed
(avoiding
killing,
stealing,
adultery,
false-‐speech
and
intoxication).
Throughout
the
journey,
Dr.
Lye
will
be
giving
teachings
and
instructions
and
leading
practices.
When
necessary
and
possible,
individuals
can
request
for
personal
guidance.

today
a

Tsopema
is
an
important

do
our
best
to
arrange
for
audiences
with
His
Holiness
and
also
some
of
the
other
high-‐lamas
residing
in
Dharamsala.
Day

(October
30)
Dharamsala.
Spring
Valley
Resorts,
Mcleodganj
(B/L/D)
There
are
lots
to

Our

and
after

Patna
we
will
travel
by
air-‐conditioned

to
the
ancient
site
of
Nalanda,
which
is
about
2

Nalanda
was
the
greatest
Buddhist
university
that
ever
existed
and
its
legacy
provides
the
core
identity
to
the
form
of
Buddhism
that
was
established
in
Tibet.
The
current
Dalai
Lama
often
refers
to
the
mainstream
of
Tibetan
Buddhism
as
inheritors
of
“the
Nalanda
tradition.”
After
Nalanda,
we
will
depart
for
Vulture’s
Peak
in
the
vicinity
of
Rajgir.
Vulture’s
Peak
is
said
to
be
the
main
site
where
the
Buddha
taught
the
Perfection
of
Wisdom
sutras
and
is
therefore
an
important
place
for
Mahayana
Buddhists.
After
Rajgir,
we
will
depart
for
Bodhgaya
and
arrive
in
time
to
see
the
“Immutable
Throne”
(Dorje
Den)
of
Shakyamuni
Buddha
at
sunset,
under
the
Bodhi
Tree
planted
at
spot
that
marks
the
site
where
Prince
Siddhartha
attained
the
state
of
Buddha.
We
will
spend
three
nights
in
Bodhgaya.
Day
15
(November
2)
Bodhgaya.
Hotel
Siddhartha
International,
Bodhgaya
(B/L/D)
Bodhgaya
is
considered
the
most
sacred
site
of
all
Buddhism
and
thus
is
a
truly
international
Buddhist
site.
We
will
begin
the
day
early
at
the
“Immutable
Throne,”
doing
practice
as
the
sun
rises.
The
rest
of
the
day
we
will
stay
close
to
this
location,
taking
time
to
take
in
all
the
blessings
and
power
of
this
holy
place.
Day
16
(November
3)
Bodhgaya.
Hotel
Siddhartha
International,
Bodhgaya
(B/L/D)
After
morning

at
the
“Immutable

we
will

(November
3)
Bodhgaya.
Hotel
Siddhartha
International,
Bodhgaya
(B/L/D)
We
have
this
day
to
deepen
our
practice
at
this
most
holy
place
of
the
Buddha.
We
will
also
visit
several
monasteries
from
different
Buddhist
cultures
in
and
around
Bodhgaya.
6
Day
18
(November
5)
Depart
for
Varanasi.
India
Benares
Hotel
(B/L/D)
We
leave
for
Varanasi
early
by
air-‐conditioned
coach.
It
is
a
250
km
trip
over
about
7
hours.
Also
know
as
Benaras
and
Kashi,
Varanasi
is
the
most
important
of
Hinduism’s
seven
holy
cities.
It
is
a
major
hub
of
religious
activities
and
has
been
important
to
also
Jainism
and
Buddhism.
From
ancient
times,
Varanasi
grew
as
an
important
industrial
center,
famous
for
its
muslin
and
silk
fabrics,
perfumes,
ivory
works,
and
sculpture.
The
Buddha
gave
his
first
sermon
at
nearby
Sarnath.
Varanasi
has
been
a
cultural
center
of
North
India
for
several
thousand
years,
and
is
closely
associated
with
the
Ganges.
Hindus
believe
that
death
in
the
city
will
bring
salvation,
making
it
a
major
center
for
pilgrimage.
The
city
is
known
worldwide
for
its
many
ghats,
embankments
made
in
steps
of
stone
slabs
along
the
river
bank
where
pilgrims
perform
ritual
ablutions.
Of
particular
note
are
the
Dashashwamedh
Ghat,
the
Panchganga
Ghat,
the
Manikarnika
Ghat
and
the
Harishchandra
Ghat,
the
last
two
being
where
Hindus
cremate
their
dead.
At
sunset
we
will
attend
the
Ganga
Aarti
–
“offering
to
the
Ganges.”
Day
19
(November
6)
Varanasi
&
Sarnath.
India
Benares
Hotel
(B/L/D)
We
will
take
a
sunrise
cruise
of
the
Ganges
and
witness
the
daily
unfolding
of
life
at
this
most
ancient
and
holy
site
in
India.
We
will
do
a
practice
while
on
the
cruise,
praying
for
all
of
life.
Slightly
before
noon
we
will
go
over
to
Sarnath
by
air-‐conditioned
coach.
Sarnath
is
a
mere
30
minute
ride.
Also
referred
to
as
Isipatana,
this
city
is
mentioned
by
the
Buddha
as
one
of
the
four
places
of
pilgrimage
to
which
his
devout
followers
should
visit.
This
is
where
the
Buddha
first
proclaimed
the
Dharma
when
he
taught
his
first
five
monk
disciples.
As
with
Bodhgaya,
there
are
many
different
monasteries
of
different
Buddhist
cultures
in
Sarnath
but
the
main
focus
is
the
Sarnath
stupa.
