words being used again and again. There is a reason for that. You see when you write
essay for IELTS you have to exhibit that you can write well, so when you write some
high quality words like apropos which is my all time favorite or accord etc, you show that
you know the words which others do not. It means that examiner will be in a positive
state of mind and will know that you have good English writing skills.

Off course if you didn't write a good essay with good structure or arguments you will not
get good bands for IELTS but if you do write acceptable essay and you use the key words
that means you will get better bands as compared to if you do not use these words. I do
not know if someone has mastered these techniques before but i am mentioning it here
now.

Remember 5 words which you can use and memorize it so that you can use it in your
essay. Take those words from the essay i have provided in the IELTS sample download
and see how i used it. Remember those words.... and know where to use them

Psychology of IELTS examiner

To understand and achieve the bands you desire in IELTS, it is very important to know
the thinking and psychology of an examiner while they check your test.

So it means that its important to know what they expect from you, what kind of style they
want you to write, what kind of words they want to see in your essay, how do you express
an idea to support your statement in an essay. These might be considered minute details

What does the examiner look for while reading through your essay?

Your views about the topic, Grammatical accuracy, structure, understanding of the topic,
supporting evidence, examples to support the arguments, convincing the reader with facts
and evidence and range of vocabulary.

Letters

Letters have a purpose; it could be for any reason formal or personal, it conveys the
message. Again while compiling a letter in IELTS writing module it makes sense to write
a rough draft so that your letter is logically correct.

Ideally your letter should be composed of maximum of three to four paragraphs.

First paragraph should be dedicated to the introduction of who you are and the relation
between the addressee and yourself. Also the first paragraph should mention the purpose
of writing a letter.

Second paragraph could be to explain the situation; depending upon the topic you have to
write.

Third paragraph could be connected to second paragraph again depending upon the topic.

Last paragraph is a wrap up of the letter so you should ask or suggest or thank.

Analysis of Graphical Content

Graphical Analysis task comes under the Academic IELTS test. It requires you to
compare and explain the graphical representation in words and is given by students who
plan to study overseas. This task does not require your personal experiences and
examples. You only need to present the factual information which is conveyed by graphs
and charts.
Your graphical essay should contain no more than four paragraphs. Ideally, you essay
should have three paragraphs; Introduction, Comparison and the Conclusion. General rule
to attempt the graphical essay is through comparison method.

Introduction paragraph in analysis of graphical content includes nature and type of the
parameters.

Examples:

“The graph exhibits people using new music places on the internet in fifteen days period
of time namely personal choice and trendy pop music.”

Parameters: Nature: - graph, Type: - number of visits. (Note that name of the companies
are not the parameters)

“The bar chart indicates a survey on two different age groups on the factors contributing
to make their environment pleasant for working.”

Parameters: Nature: - bar chart, Type: - age groups, factors for pleasant work
environment.

“The data exhibits the conclusion of study of the average number of cars passing on three
different roads between 1993 and 2002. In general the trend was upward over the period.”
Parameters: Nature: - data, Type: - number of cars, three different roads.

“The bar char shows the predicted sales of silver goods in ‘OOOs of units for two
companies; Meteor Products Ltd and Mark Jones Ltd for next year.”

Parameters: Nature: - bar chart, Type: - predicted sales. (Note that name of the companies
are not the parameters)

Observe the parameters their nature and the types have been classified in above examples
which makes the content of the introduction paragraph. The introduction of analysis task
must start with the nature and type of graph and charts. For example is it a Bar chart, Pie
chart, Graph or a set of Data.

Second paragraph should include the comparison between the companies using the data
provided by the parameters. Using words like; in contrast, in comparison, however, but,
on the other hand, whereas and so on, are highly recommended while comparing the
companies.

Examples:
“Staring with Music Choices websites; 40,000people went on this new site on the first
day. Half of them backed out the next day. In contrast to this pop parade net sites were
visited by 120,000 music lovers on the day one which decreased slightly on the next day
there after regaining the same fame on 3rd day.”

“On the internal factors above 50 % in both age groups agreed that team spirit, competent
boss and job satisfaction are essential to make their environment pleasant. Whereas on
the external factors, there are contrasting results. On the chance of personal development
and promotional aspects, 80% to 90% of the younger groups were in favor while only
less than 50% of the older group thought so. A similar pattern is also noted on job
security. With regards to money, 69% to 70% on both age groups said it is essential.”

“The most striking feature is that sales will increase for both companies. It is anticipated
that sales of Mark Jones Ltd will start at 450,000 units in January decreasing by 200,000
units following month with a gradual recovery over the subsequent four months reaching
400,000 units in June. Those of Mark Jones Ltd are predicated to be stable until August
picking up to 600,000 units in September and October. Sales of Mark Jones Ltd will
reach peak of 900,000 in December. For those of Meteor Products Ltd is forecasted a
gradual increase with the largest sale of 600,000 units in December. In the beginning of
the next year those of Meteor Products Ltd will stand at 150,000 units falling back to
100,000 units in February, rising steadily to 250,000 in June. In subsequent months sale
will reach 450,000 units increasing 500,000 units in August, staying stable until
November. “

Conclusion normally includes the generalized comparison and view of the whole of the
graphical content. There is no set of rules to end up the topic. You can explain the general
trend in the conclusion or you can compare the statistics in a generalized form.

Introduction in any essay is the ice breaker. So make sure you introduce your views first,
because that is what they ask.

For example you would normally see in IELTS writing module asking you to, discuss
your opinion for the given topic or do you agree or disagree with the statement. So,
always remember to tell examiner your views about the topic before you write the essay.

Ideally you should express your views in first paragraph. For examples on how to write
your views please refer to the sample essays provided in this website.
When you tackle the writing task you should see the information as is, and then write the
way the statement is written. For example, sometimes you see the topic with lot of
information about something and then they ask to discuss or put forth our opinion.

Some people believe that computers are more a hindrance than a help in today’s world.
Other feel that they are such indispensable tools that they would not be able to live or
work without them. In what ways are computers a hindrance? What is your opinion?

The topic wanted you to discuss the computer as a requirement in our society and also
wanted you to criticize computers. In short it asks for the advantages and disadvantages
of the computer. So, one strategy for writing this topic could be the paraphrase of the
statement which is given in the topic in the introduction followed by your opinion in the
same introduction paragraph.

Example:

“Some people believe that computers are more a hindrance than a help in today’s world
while on the other hand some people feel that they are such indispensable tools that they
would not be able to live or work without them. In my opinion, every technology has
some advantages and limitations and one has to negate shortcomings and should benefit
from the advantages.”

In above paragraph you see that the topic is paraphrased then followed by the
personalized opinion which constitutes the introduction of essay.

Remember 5 words which you can use and memorize it so that you can use it in your

Importance of a Rough Draft

Before you write a single word for your writing task, make a rough draft, which will
make your essay logical. For instance, by observing IELTS Writing Tip - 6 , write a
rough draft on what you will be writing in the introduction.

The second paragraph will deal with advantages of computers; write as many advantages
of computer as you can in bullet form.

These points will make the content of your second paragraph. Connect these two
paragraphs by using however or other words which change the meaning of the statement
in this paragraph. Remember it’s important to connect the paragraphs so that the
transition from advantages to disadvantages is smooth.

For the third paragraph, write the disadvantages of the computers; write as many points
as you can, do not limit yourself in this part. This will make up your content for third
paragraph.

The last part is the conclusion, paraphrase your opinion with reasons which you have
mentioned in your paragraph second and third while making the rough draft.

What is an introduction paragraph?

The introduction paragraph is the first paragraph of your essay. It introduces the main
idea of your essay. A good opening paragraph captures the interest of your reader and

ideas. The summary paragraph is often called a "conclusion." It summarizes or restates

What facts and figures to write?

IELTS examiners have limited knowledge of science and research. The one thing they
know is English. Some books recommend writing the true facts, but IELTS examination
is exception. What ever you write it should sound credible. Take your time to read this
paragraph and see how it’s written.

computers are harmful to our wellbeing. According to annals published back in 2006,
working on computers for long hours continuously, can lead to stress and depression. In

How to express an opinion?

Giving facts, examples and figures is the best way to express your opinion.

For example, you might explain figures like the paragraph written below. Again you can
write whatever fact you want to prove your argument.

“In accord to the some figures, the percentage of smokers has risen to almost 17% in five
years and that is a major cause of concern. And it is not unusual to understand that
majority of lung and heart diseases are consequences of smoking. In addition to that,
people who do not smoke actually are also smoking it is called as “Passive Smoking”.
Recently Australia has implemented some regulations for smokers which is a relief to
nonsmokers.”

This paragraph is stating the figures, which are just made up to support the argument.
This is the best way to support your arguments and opinions and writing the facts and
figures are easy when you know that you can write without worrying too much.

How to connect two paragraphs?

Connect the two paragraphs by using however if you are changing the idea.

For example:

“In accord to one research, some people can sustain the bad effects of smoking and can
live longer. However, some people can not sustain the bad effects of smoking and
therefore, the results can be devastating.

People who could be severely effected by smoking are more prone to heart and lung
diseases. Paying for the medical treatment should not be biased. Because it doesn’t matter
if the person is smoker or non-smoker, the problem in non-smoker could be similar to a
smoker. For example, a non-smoker could be passive smoker.”

In these paragraphs you can see how first paragraph is supporting the smoking and the
transition is done by using “However” and then the next paragraph has changed the idea
to bad effects of smoking.

Connect the two paragraphs by using words like therefore, moreover, similarly and
furthermore if you are emphasizing the idea. For example;

“Doctors and nurses are individuals who not only work for a living, but also contribute to
our society. They are the people who can be regarded as “hands of God”. Reason being
they save our lives, hence make this planet better for living. If one really wants to
understand what it means to be a doctor, ask them, they will tell that you must have a
“heart of a lion and hands of a weaver” in order to be a doctor. It is so true. Doctors and
nurses improve our quality of lives. They contribute to the community in ways different
to any other professions.

Similarly, teachers are also building blocks of our society. They educate us in order to
make us successful in our professional and personal lives. Mentors make us realize our
true potential and our responsibilities as an individual. Personally speaking, they are the
messengers of angels who teach us how our life should be. They give us sense of
direction in life. They show us the way to success.”

In above paragraphs you can observe that the idea in first paragraph is connected to
second paragraph by using “Similarly”. You can use other words like furthermore or in
addition to and so on. Remember it’s important to connect the paragraphs so that the
transition is smooth.

How an essay should look like when it finishes?

Your essay should be between four to five paragraphs, including the introduction which

You have to make sure that your essay is grammatically correct. If you have any doubt

errors and rectify them.
