Purpose of calculation:

Known: A double thread Acme screw and a thrust collar, each with known diameter and running friction coefficient,
are used to raise a specific load
Find: a) Determine the screw pitch, lead, thread depth, mean pitch diameter, and helix angle.
b) Estimate the starting torque for raising and lowering the load.

Assumptions
1 The starting and running friction remain steady.
2 Starting friction is about one-third higher than running friction

d= 1 in

Load
W= 1000 lb

Thrust mean diameter

dc = 1.5 in

Coefficient of running friction for f

f= 0.16

Coefficient of running friction for fc

fc = 0.12

5 threads per inch so

p= 0.2 in

Because of double thread

L= 0.4 in ###

Thread Depth
p/2= 0.1 in ###

Mean Diameter (From Fig. 10.4a)

dm = 0.9 in ###

Lead Angle (from Eq.10.1)

0.1405 rad ###
λ = 8.05 °

Thread Angle
α = 14.5 °

Thread angle measured in the normal plane

αn = 14.363 ° ###

Starting Torque
Ts = ### lb.in ###

Lowing Torque
Tl = ### lb.in ###

Comment
The preceding calculations assumed that the stresses are within the elastic range. Note that no provision was made for stress
concentration or for any superimposed bending load that would also be present as a result of the jamming. Torque applied
to the sheave by the belt was also neglected, but this would likely be negligile because of belt slipperage. In addition, it
is only because of assumed belt slippage that the inertia of the driving motor is not a factor.
