ACTION RESEARCH SURVEY

Dear Participants,

Thank you for taking time to complete this survey. Your input and insights are important to this study
entitled Action Research in Teacher Education: Challenges Faced and Support Needed. The purpose
of this questionnaire is to collect data about the perceptions of the pre-service teachers who embark in
action research in their final year as part of their course requirement. The study explores the
challenges and support needed by the pre-service teachers in conducting their action research. This
research hopes to enhance knowledge in this area as an effort to further enhance teacher education in
Malaysia.

There are two parts in this survey. Part I requires you to select the response that best indicates the
difficulty that you experienced with the components of action research. Part II of the survey asks
about your opinion in relation to action research. Thank you for your time and input in making this
study possible.

ACTION RESEARCH SURVEY
Class :___________ Male/Female: ____________

PART I
Please read all directions carefully before completing each section of the survey.

Please rate the difficulty you experienced with the following components of action research
using the nine- point following scale. The nine- point response scale range from (1) which indicates
“no difficulty” to (9) which indicates “an extreme level of difficulty”. The mid-point between
these two extremes in the scale is represented by (5) which indicates moderate level of difficulty.
You may choose any one of the nine responses in the scale which represents one degree in the
continuum. You are also to explain your reasons for your choice in the space provided below each
survey question.

1. Defining the research question.

(no difficulty ) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (extreme difficulty)

Explain your reason(s) for choosing that level of difficulty.

First, it was quite hard to choose and write the correct research question. It was okay after I
asked my supervisor in charge about my research question suitability.

2. Writing the literature review

(no difficulty) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (extreme difficulty)

Explain your reason(s) for choosing that level of difficulty.

It was meaningful experience for me when it comes to find the literature review based on my
action research because there was quite a number of literature review that I found for my
action research.

3. Developing and writing the methodology.
(no difficulty) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (extreme difficulty)

Explain your reason(s) for choosing that level of difficulty.

It was quite hard for me at first to find the correct method to use in the action research.

4. Analyzing the data.

(no difficulty) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (extreme difficulty)

Explain your reason(s) for choosing that level of difficulty.

I personally do not enjoy analysing the data when it comes to numerical because I always
blank about finding suitable way to analyse the data.

5. Organizing and writing the findings.

(no difficulty) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (extreme difficulty)

Explain your reason(s) for choosing that level of difficulty.

I did organize my findings but I was having hard time to write the findings based on the data
because I have to analyse them first.

PART II
Please answer the following questions by indicating whether you disagree, neutral, or agree with
the statement using the nine- point following scale. The nine- point response scale range from (1)
which indicates “that you disagree” to (9) which indicates “that you agree”. The mid-point
between these two extremes in the scale is represented by (5) which indicates “that you do not feel
strongly either way (neutral)”. You may choose any one of the nine responses in the scale which
represents one degree in the continuum. You are also to explain your choice in the space provided
below each survey question.

6. Action research is valuable to the teaching and learning process for me as a teacher.
(disagree) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (agree)

Explain your choice.

I do not feel strongly either way because doing action research for me basically depends on a
person thought. In my opinion, I believe that by doing action research, I can identify which
area that I need to overcome for having balanced lesson for my pupils.

7. Action research is valuable to the teaching and learning process for my students.
(disagree) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (agree)

Explain your choice.

It is valuable for my students as whenever I did interventions with them, they can know
whether they can make

8. This action research project positively impacted my students’ learning.
(disagree) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (agree)

Explain your choice.

Yes it does impacted on my students especially in remembering and recalling correct sounds
of the vocabulary.

9. This action research positively impacted my teaching.

(disagree) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (agree)

Explain your choice.

Yes it did impacted on my teaching especially when conducting teaching of speaking skills
to pupils.

10. I view myself- as a teacher- researcher.

(disagree) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (agree)

Explain your choice.

Not quite yet. I always think myself as a teacher who occasionally looks for better
improvements in my teaching.

Thank you very much for your time.
