1) If Vxy = 110arg(20°) , Vxz = 160arg(-50°), Vay = 80arg(130°), Find (a)

Vyz (b) Vaz (c) Vzx/Vxy
Solution:
(a)Vyz = Vyx + Vxz = -110arg(20°) + 160arg(-50°) = -103.4 - j37.62 +
102.8 - j122.6 = -0.6 - j160.2
Vyz = 160arg(-90.21°)
(b) Vaz = Vay + Vyz = 80arg(130°) + 160.2arg(-90.21°) = -51.42 + j61.28
-0.6-j160.2 = -52.02 - j98.92
Vaz = 111.8arg(-117.7°)
(c) VV xy
zx
= −160arg(−50°) 160arg(130°)
110arg(20°) = 110arg(20°) = 1.455arg(110°)
2.) For a particular circuit, it is known that V12 = 100arg(0°), V45 =
60arg(75°), V42 = 80arg(120°) and V35 = -j120 in volts. Find (a) V25 (b) V13
Solution:
(a)V25 = V24 + V45 = -80arg(120°) + 6-arg(75°) = 40 - j69.28 + 15.53 +
j57.96 = 55.53 - j11.32
V25 = 56.67arg(-11.52°) V
(b) V13 = V12 + V25 + V53 = 100 + 55.53 -j11.32 + j20 = 155.53 + j108.7
V13 = 189.8arg(34.95°)
3.) A three phase wye connected load is supplied by an abc sequence bal-
anced three phase wye connected source with a phase voltage of 120V rms. If
the line impedence and load impedence per phase are 1+j1 Ω and 20+j10 Ω,
respectively, determine the value of line currents and load voltages.
Soln:
The phase voltages are,
Van = 120∠0o
Vbn = 120∠ − 120o
Vcn = 120∠120o
The per-phase circuit diagram is shown below

1
The line current for the a phase is,
120∠0o
IaA = 21+j11 = 5.06∠ − 27.65o
The load voltage for the a phase, VAN is
VAN = (5.06∠ − 27.65o )(20+j10) = 113.15∠-1.08o V rms
We have, ∠IbB = ∠IaA - 120o ; ∠IcC = ∠IaA + 120o
The corresponding line currents and load voltages for the b and c phases are
IbB = 5.06∠-147.65o A rms ; VBN = 113.15∠-121.08o V rms
IcC = 5.06∠-267.65o A rms ; VCN = 113.15∠-241.08o V rms
4) A three-phase supply with an effective line voltage of 240 V, has an
unbalanced 4 connected load as shown in fig. Obtain the line currents and
total power.

Soln:
The power calculations can be performed without knowledge of the sequence
of the system. The effective values of phase currents of the system are,
IABef f = 240/25 =9.6 A ; IBCef f = 240/15 =16A ; ICAef f = 240/20 =12A
Hence the complex powers in the three phases are
SAB = (9.6)2 (25∠90o ) = 2304∠90o = 0+j2304
SBC = (16)2 (15∠30o ) = 3840∠30o = 3325+j1920
SCA = (12)2 (20∠0o ) = 2880∠0o = 2880+j0∠30o
The total complex power is their sum,
ST = 6205+j4224

2
That is PT = 6205 W and QT = 4224 VAR (Inductive)
To obtain the currents a sequence must be assumed; Let it be ABC. Then,
o
IAB = 339.4∠120
25∠90oo = 13.6∠30 A
o

15∠30o = 22.6∠ − 30 A
IBC = 339.4∠0 o
339.4∠240o
ICA = 20∠0o = 17.0∠240o A
The line currents are obtained by applying KCL at the junctions.
IA = IAB +IAC = 13.6∠30o - 17.0∠240o = 29.6∠46.7o
IB = IBC +IBA = 22.6∠ − 30o - 13.6∠30o = 19∠-66.7o
IC = ICA +ICB = 17.0∠240o - 22.6∠ − 30o = 28.3∠ − 173.1o
5)1) Find the rms line voltage VL , at the source of the circuit in Fig. As
shown, the rms load phase voltage is 100 V and each line impedance is 2 + j 3
ohm.

Solution: The rms line current IL can be used to find the line voltage VL . IL
is equal to the 100-V load phase voltage divided by the magnitude of the load
phase impedance.
100
IL = abs(10−j9) = 7.43A
In flowing, this current produces a voltage drop from a source terminal to
the load neutral terminal N , which drop is equal to the product of this current
and the magnitude of the sum of the impedances that the current flows through.
This voltage is
= IL × abs(Zline + Zload ) = 7.43
√ × abs(2 + j3 + 10 − j9)√= 99.7V
The line voltage at source is 3 times this that is VL = 3 × 99.7 = 173V
6)A 480-V, three-phase, three-wire circuit has two parallel-connected bal-
anced ∆ loads, one of 5Ω resistors and the other of 20Ω resistors. Find the total
rms line current.

3
Solution: Because the corresponding resistors of the ∆ loads are in parallel,
the resistances can be combined to produce an equivalent single∆ of 5 q 20 = 4Ω
resistors. The phase current of this ∆ is equal to the line voltage divided by the
4Ω resistance,
Iph = 480
4 = 120A √
And, √of course, the line current is 3 times greater. So
IL = 3Iph = 208A
