Spring 2014 MAE211 Thermodynamics 4. There are three heat reservoirs maintaining constant temperatures: i.e.

, a high
temperature heat source (TH=1000 K), a cold outer space (TL=250 K), and a room
(TR=300 K). An engineer developed a heating system for the room using a heat
engine and a heat pump. The heat engine was installed within the room (TR is the heat

3. Two rigid tanks of A and B contain saturated mixtures of water and vapor at the same
pressure. Volume of tank A is 9 L (liters) and its quality is 0.9 (xA=0.9). Volume of
tank B is 2 L and its quality is 0.1 (xB=0.1). When these two tanks are merged
together, what is the final quality of the saturated mixture? (Assume that the specific
volumes are vf=0.001 m3/kg for liquid water, vg=1.0 m3/kg for vapor.) (15 points)
