Bhoja theorizes that “the remainder of an utterance” consists of
inferring contextually/cognitively-relevant “missing” meaning in instances of purport-incongruence (arthākāṃkśānivartakovākyaśeṣaḥ, Ibid.). Cf. Bach and Harnish 1979, 15, who, adapting the Gricean model amended by Searle note that a speech-act’s success depends on the hearer’s recognition (abduction!) of a speaker’s reflexive intention or “R-intention.”
