ROCKET FINAL PREPARATIONS!

Please use this as a guide to complete your analysis, lab report and to get ready for your
final presentation.

Analysis:
1. Please make sure you have calculated the average time and the height of your rocket.
a. SHOW YOUR CALCULATIONS FOR FULL CREDIT!
b. Do this for ALL of the rockets launched.
2. FOR YOUR ROCKET ONLY:
a. Calculate the velocity of your rocket as it launched using the following
equation: v f = 2gh .
mv
b. Calculate the force of the rocket launch using the equation: F = where t
t
is
€ equal to the amount of time the rocket blast lasted (____________s).
c. Draw the FBD for the rocket launch (make sure you use the answer from your
theory section, question 5!!).

d. Rank your rocket’s height on a bar graph of all of the heights (first, second...).
e. Explain WHY your rocket did/did not go the highest in the class using the
words velocity and force – also include a discussion of the design of your
rocket and how that affected the final flight. (This is a short paragraph to
explain all parts.)
f. Calculate the total energy of your rocket.
g. Use your trajectory to diagram the energy transformations at the following
points in your flight AND label the amount of energy with the appropriate
values:
i. At the beginning as the engine is ignited
ii. Halfway to the top of the trajectory
iii. At the top of the trajectory
iv. Halfway back to the ground
v. On the ground, after the flight
h. Calculate how fast the rocket hits the ground if the parachute does not deploy.

Poster and presentation:

1. Explain how well your rocket performed overall in comparison to the class:
a. Use the design as a part of the discussion (good and bad parts of yours).
b. Describe the way that the mass, height, velocity and force affected your
launch and flight.
c. Please discuss any problems you had! They are very important because
science is not perfect!
2. Your group is going to be assigned ONE of the following to present to the rest of the
class (please circle or highlight it and include it on your poster):
a. Newton’s second law: identify and explain all of the parts of your rocket and
launch that are affected by Newton’s second law (describe the variables and
what they are in “real life”).
b. Newton’s third law: identify and explain all of the parts of your rocket and
launch that are affected by Newton’s third law (what are these things in “real
life”).
c. Velocity: identify and explain all of the parts of your rocket and launch that
affected the velocity of your rocket (describe the variables and what they are
in “real life”).
d. Acceleration: identify and explain all of the parts of your rocket and launch
affected by the acceleration of the rocket in both directions.
e. Forces and FBD: identify and explain all of the forces on your rocket and
during the launch that affected the performance of your rocket (on the way
up AND down).
f. Trajectories and projectiles: identify and explain the trajectory of your rocket
and why it is a projectile.
