About the WORKSHOP
Large excavations for the development of infrastruc-
ture project are being planned to increasingly great
depths, often beyond the current experience and
knowledge base, with the exception perhaps of some
very steep and high natural soil slopes. Despite recent
advances, there remains significant challenges in un-
derstanding the mechanisms of slope behaviour and
failure, and methods of stability analysis for such
slopes. In an attempt to bring together the state of the
art capabilities in these fields, as well as new research
and developments, Indian Geotechnical Society Hyd
chapter in association with IIT Hyderabad and
JNTUCE, Hyderabad is organizing a workshop
(GeoApps 2017: Recent Developments) on the Stabil-
ity of soil Slopes, and in general recent developments
in geotechnical engineering to be held in IIT Hydera-
bad on 18th February 2017.
The two regions most vulnerable to landslides are the
Himalayas and the Western Ghats. The Himalayas
mountain belt comprise of tectonically unstable
younger geological formations subjected to severe
seismic activity. The workshop on GeoApps: Recent
Developments aims to provide a forum for the ex-
change of technical information among academicians,
practitioners and young engineers. The workshop will
have lectures by Prof. Ikuo Towhata, retired profes-
sor, Civil Engineering Department, the University of
Tokyo, Japan and Prof. M. R. Madhav, Emeritus pro-
fessor at JNTU Hyderabad and Visiting Faculty at IIT
Hyderabad. Two more lectures will be followed from
people in academia and industry.

Invited Speakers
IGS Hyderabad Chapter has been very active in or-
ganizing symposiums and conferences since last dec-
ade. Recently, a Symposium on Geodisasters: Ground
& Slope Instability held on 1st October 2016. A sym-
posium on ‘Ground Improvement & Geosynthet-
ics’ (GIGS-2015) was held on 19 August 2015. These
events were well attended by practicing engineers,
academicians and young engineers.
PROF. IKUO TOWHATA
Prof. Ikuo Towhata, a well-known geotechnical engi-
neering professor Emeritus at the University of To-
kyo, Japan has been visiting IIT Hyderabad. During
his stay from 29 Jan to 10 Mar 2017, he has been ex-
tensively engaged in delivering lectures in Advanced
Geotechnical Earthquake Engg course to PG students
and interaction with faculty members and research
scholars of the school. He will be delivering lectures
on monitoring of slopes for early warning of rainfall-
induced landslides, liquefaction resistance of sand
and remedial measures of liquefaction-affected city.
PROF. M.R. MADHAV
Prof Madhav is well known internationally as a re-
searcher and teacher. He established schools of re-
search at IIT, Kanpur, and at JNTU, Hyderabad in
Geotechnical Engineering and his work on Modelling
and Numerical Analyses of Geotechnical and Ground
Engineering Problems is monumental. He has con-
tributed to the Practice of Geotechnical Engineering
as a Consultant and to the Indian Geotechnical Socie-
ty as a Member of the Executive Committee, as a Re-
viewer for and Editor of the Indian Geotechnical
Journal and as President.
